it seems that all my subarus have had a loud hum in the rear and i've never asked anyone about it. my 03 forester is getting louder and i wonder what ya'll think about this? what causes it? what is the fix? though not new to subaru ownership, i'm new to this forum and not a very strong auto mechanic. i do okay in general maintenance but have too much respect for a real mechanic to call myself one. papi

If the humming occurs regardless of engine speed, your rear wheel bearings may be on their way out. It's a very common problem for Subarus. Unfortunately there isn't much DIY potential for the fix because the replacement bearings need to be pressed into the hub. If the noise has been going on for some time, chances are that the hub itself may be damaged too. In that case I would replace the hub entire assembly, or else you'll be having issue again soon after.
