I just got back from the dealer and they told me that I needed to replace the rear diff. The thing is I just had it replaced 2yrs. ago and put 50k miles on it.Is this possible to have a rear diff. go bad in 2yrs.?They told me the cost of a new Diff.was $2000parts only. Can you rebuild them or maybe a used one? Any coments welcome.

Simple answer, yes a diff can fail in a matter of hours if it is not set up right. The question is, what is going bad? Gears or bearings?

Bearings can be replaced as can gears, however to my knowledge Subaru doesn't sell just the gears. Bearings are cheap it is the labor that goes into replacing them that gets costly as the back lash for the gears should be checked and adjusted if needed. Which can require assembly and dis-assembly multiple times.

Used diff should be easy to come by. In my opinion, if a diff has made it more then 20K, it should last another 200K.
