I have 2 quotes for a new forester sport. One with the 6 speaker stereo 8” screen and no power lift gate, the other with the 572 9 speaker HK system plus the power gate. Problem I have is that the price difference between the two options is about $5k difference. My question is, is the bigger speaker system really that worth it?

For $5K, there must be more to it than just the upgraded stereo and the power rear lift gate. Something sounds amiss with what you are saying. I have a LOADED Sport and love it.

Yeah, I have the Sport with Option Package CODE 22: BSD/RCTA + RAB + Multimedia Plus at $795 (list). The other: CODE 24: BSD/RCTA + RAB + Multimedia Plus + Harman Kardon Amp & speakers + Power Rear Gate lists at $2045. ($1250 difference) If you check a couple of the other trim level option code packages it looks like the power rear gate is $550 and the HK amp and speakers audio is $700 - not that they can be ordered separately, just by difference in package contents/price.

So there is something else going on there. FWIW, we chose to go with the lesser audio and standard lift gate. Neither of us are audiophiles and I have some hearing loss issues so might not appreciate the difference even if we chose it. I have liked the sound when listening to music though. Caveat there is that's either broadcast FM some and Sirius/XM and not sure the source quality of either.

I was told that if I wanted to retrofit my hatch with the power option it would be 7 grand.
I'll reply with the following:

1. why would anyone want to even attempt to retrofit this in the first place? Retrofitting anything on a vehicle is never economical as can be seen by the $7K price you posted and who knows who calculated that and how it as calculated
2. still sounds way too high, if it can be done, to retrofit this option. Maybe $1500-$2000 but certainly not $7K but I could be missing something here
3. if you really want it, just buy the package that gets you what you want?

My LOADED Sport had an MSRP of around the mid-$32's. I got her for around $28,500.

Because they ordered it wrong, and I was in a hurry to purchase because I wanted it to drive to Florida.
The retrofit is so expensive because they would need to order the entire hatch, holes, grommets, and electrical routing that pre-exists for those options.
The hatch part itself lists around $4,800.

Yea I’m not sure $5k is worth it. I love the audio stuff but the lift gate is just not worth it. Also found out crossbars not included but those are list price $200. I asked again for a better price but he would not budge on either price. I feel like the one without the big audio and power lift gate I got a way better deal. He has about $6k off sticker.

Ok well I just got kicked in the nutz on this one. Apparently the sales guy "misquoted" the original price of option #22 for $25K. Yea no! Add another $4k onto that. New it was too good to be true. My option is a #24 package for $30,293. I think I should be able to do better than that though.

I think those retrofit prices may fall into the "Go Away!" category - that is, they don't really want to do it. Probably worth looking to the thread on prices paid. Besides prices paid, there's a lot of discussion on dealing with the dealers, negotiating, etc.

+1. The invoice for a base Sport is pretty close to $28K. My Sport has most of everything you can hang on it and it's invoice was just over $33k. That's only $5k difference. Even with MSRP numbers No way HK and Power lift rear is $5k by itself.

If you’re now quoted $30k for a 19’ Sport with Option Code 24 then you got it going on already. The Sport starts off at $28,800(add the destination charge and it’s about $29,700 stock Sport)
Adding the Option Code 24 will tack an additional $2,045; Grand total of almost $32k

So whether your dealer is shaving the price a bit, your quote is pretty good IMO.

That 5k also includes the blind spot detector and rear sensor that beeps if there is somebody coming up from behind you in a parking lot from the left or right. It’s the speakers, power lift gate, blind spot and that rear sensor. I test drove one that was loaded but wasn’t really impressed with those extra features. To me it was more novelty and look at me features. So I bought mine with out and glad I did. The blind spot detector was annoying and at times so is the lane departure feature. I keep mine turned off unless I’m on the interstate. Also if the power lift gate wears out one day you figure it’s gotta be a expensive fix.
