Quite possibly - I "imagine" it has something to do with a "smart alternator" as many later model cars have now. These are a real pain for people with auxiliary batteries because they won't get fully charged with normal voltage sensitive relays (VSR) and so some electronic trickery is needed.

would be nice though to not have to think about turning it off
If you do it regularly you may be surprised that muscle memory will kick in and then it's no big deal. Just like those of us with older Foresters have to enable cruise control every time we start the car; it simply becomes an automatic movement w/o even thinking. ;)
