Hello All,

I found an FXT in Portland that I want to buy and need to have it inspected. If it checks out I am going to buy it. Since I'm probably just going to have the car shipped down to me in CA if it checks out I'm thinking of having it inspected by two different shops, just to be extra cautious. The car is mostly stock except for suspension, wheels and a few minor cosmetic issues. Where should I go to get a good thorough inspection of the engine (compression etc ... ) and the transmission?

I've heard good things about PRE (though: the seller recommended this place, which makes me wary of any potential relationship they may have) so I also want to go to a second shop (paranoid, cautious!). I see that Superior Import Repair has a good reputation and are not too far from PRE.

What do you guys think of that plan? I hope it works out, I've been wanting to replace my 02 sf with a newer XT and this one looks like it might work out. Fingers crossed!

Superior Import has a great reputation. It's been recommended to me by two multiple Subaru owners/friends for repair work, although I haven't tried them yet. They'll meet my new to me 05 FX next month, to fix my rear defroster.

Yesterday would have been a great day for a test drive. 8 inches of snow on the valley floor! Today not so much - freezing rain. Even a Suby can't do that w/o chains.

Cool - thanks for the reply. It looks like they are pretty close to the dealership that has the Forester I want to buy, as well as PRE. I'll have them run a check as well.

Ughh - So apparently Superior Import does not do inspections on rebuilt cars for out-of-state clients, so I'm still looking for a second shop to do inspections. Anyone have any advice??? The car was rebuilt from salvage, but I'm looking at it anyway because: I've seen the pre-restoration photos and the damage was not that bad, the engine seems to be 100% stock so I'm guessing it was not abused, and it is a manual.

Does anyone know of a reputable shop that can check this thing out other than PRE or Superior Import?? Prefereably closer to the airport???

You're welcome!
For anyone that finds this thread seeking PDX Subaru wrench shops, I took the test car to two locations:

PRE Racing and Wentworth Subaru. Both shops were extremely thorough, they both uncovered not-so-obvious problems and were extremely professional and helpful. PRE was kind enough to email me photos of problem spots, Wentworth found a very well hidden fix on the car that was poorly executed. Overall I would recommend them both very highly. PRE was extremely helpful and took the time to explain a lot of stuff over the phone to me, they are totally a class act.
