OWL Dash Cam Install

So, as you all know, I bought the 2019 Sport for my 22 year old daughter. I was going to install a Blackvue, as I have in my Audi and my wife's Acura, but all dash cams require you to reformat the SD card each month or so to keep the recording capabilities stable. I knew my daughter would never do this and did not want to risk something happening and it not recording because of an SD card error.

Therefore, I waited until Black Friday and bought the OWL, which has received excellent reviews, and just installed it Saturday. The install takes about 10 minutes and the quality of the video is solid. It also not only records the road ahead but also records what's taking place inside the vehicle with full audio. It comes with a year of 4G LTE cell service so you can monitor the vehicle REAL-TIME via the OWL's cellular data connection. It also stores 2 weeks of HD video onboard the unit if you do not wish to renew the LTE service at $99/year.

The quality of the unit is very impressive and set-up is a piece of cake even for a novice. Just sharing my experience. I know it's pricey to some considering you can get a decent dash cam for $100-$150 but, for certain situations, it's a fantastic option...especially for the vehicles your kids are driving:thumbsup:

Hard wired into the mirror or no ?

@securityguy this looks like a quality cam. Do you think the forward dash mount shown will affect EyeSight?

Check out the link and watch the quick install video...not an option on the OWL.

I contacted OWL before the purchase and they stated they fully tested it using employees with Subaru's that have ES and zero issues. You would know it right away if there were any issues because you will get ES errors displaying on your dash telling you that ES has been turned off. After I installed it, I went for a nice drive and ES worked perfectly and never gave any errors. My daughter has driven it several times since yesterday afternoon and all is working great...I am very happy so far:thumbsup:

Can you mount it in the middle of the windshield and still have the unit clear the shroud on the center dash info display?

Are the actual videos any clearer than those shown on Youtube?
I cannot even read the nuber plates on cars a few feet away in the Youtube samples and those from users.

Yes, it comes with three adapters so you can adjust to various heights. I'll take a few pics and post my daughters install. I also moved it just slightly right to the passengers side about an inch so it does not impact the light sensor on the center of the dash.

The cameras, front and rear are HD. I looked at a few clips from my daughters cam when I took it on my "test" drive, post-install, and could read the plates in front of me on the video.
^^^a lot of that data in the link is dated so check OWL's website for the latest specs and updates.
Those plastic lenses would likely warp in some decent Aussie outdoor temps i.e. 47C or 116F.

I like the sound of some of the specs on the OWL but after reading the DCT Forum comments I am not so sure anymore.

I do have to admit to being a fan of the Street Guardian brand of Dashcam's though.

I don't think temps are an issue...it was built for being inside of a car in very hot temps.
