Hey guys....heres my little adventure this weekend

I wanted to test the Forester on this great fathers day weekend with my daughter. We were both pumped to drive on the sand finally, and weve been going to OBX since she was a baby, Ive been since I could drive a car. I love it down there.
Anyways...driving up to Oregon Inlet, I pull over, air down to 20psi. get back in and do a quick survey of the trail onto the beach. I notice a few trucks stopped, im talking big ol f250s, Blazers etc, guys just shootin the**** it looked like. Or so I thought. There were some other rigs just plowing through the white stuff and I step on the skinny pedal....
Ok, heres were it gets bad....As I drive, I pick a line thats not too rooty, not too deep to where I will bottom out and I carry on really good....Well, it seems those trucks I thought were just dudes chatting, were actually stuck so bad there were 2 trucks trying to yank out the f250....then I passed a big ol Blazer on 35s stuck as stuck could be too. So being curteous, I have to veer off and pick a different line.....which was an awfull line with roots so deep and soft that I just plowed deep and got stuck.

As Im cussing under my breath, I turn off traction control, and do the reverse back and forth rock out thing and just get deeper. Crap! So I break out the shovel and snatchstrap. Well now me and the Blazer guy become buds and share my shovel. He tries to get a tow from a hemi dodge that then becomes stuck! Oh crap I think. Im never getting out of here! Well a nice guy in a 4runner asks if I want a tow. I said hell yeah! and he asks if I want a to to the beach or to the lot, and I said, **** if these monster rigs are being swallowed up, I want the hell outta here! I go in my cooler and crack a couple of beers as we dig out a bit and hook up the strap.
Here goes nothing.....He yanks, I floor it in reverse and out we both go!

We get all unhitched, laugh it off, and I thanked him for his kindness!

Moral of the story.......Survey your off road adventure thoroughly before you venture out. I didnt feel that foolish in the forester just by seeing all the other carnage out there. It seemed the beach that day was just soooo soft and rooty and wanted to eat trucks alive!

Mind you Im not a total noob to beach driving. Ive taken my Samurai down there countless times so Im used to an underpowered vehicle and how to drive on sand. That day my number got picked thats all!

Otherwise, my weekend with my daughter was the best fathers day gift I could ever ask for:woohoo:

Ha Ha! All adds to the fun and adventure :icon_biggrin:

Often the Subies, being so light, can outdo the big rigs on soft sand.

My worst stuck's were when I was absolutely sure I'd have no problem.

Just part of the game.

We all laughed about it at the end......but this just makes me want to add more Utility to my SUV....bigger tires, a little lift, diff guards, skid plate....etc.

LOL. That's the truest statement that could be said. I've been stuck only once to need a pull out, and that was RIGHT after I said "piece of cake" to my buddy.

But when I know for sure I'd be stuck.......it gets through without a hitch. Crazy sometimes.

As for sand, I find the cure for getting through the really soft, deep stuff is to carry speed, lots and lots of speed.

Been there, done that... at Pismo Beach here in CA. Planned for a short midnight cruise on the beach and, due to darkness, steered right into the deep stuff while trying to avoid several intoxicated drivers in big pick-ups and a bird sanctuary. 1.5 hours of shoveling later, one of our helpers (a few guys took pity on us, including a tow truck driver who legally wasn't allowed to tow us off the beach) was finally able to boost the car onto the hardpack.

Don't feel bad... It'll be one of those stories that you'll remember and can laugh about in the future!

where is the best place on the outer banks NOT to get stuck? on hatteras island or other places? was thinking about it but not too keen on getting stuck. have a lot of mountain fire road 4WD driving experience and some snow, but NO sand yet.

I was totally not bummed about getting stuck...I know it happens. I was laughing the whole time watching everyone else get stuck and those recovering other vehicles get stuck too! As I was digging out, my daughter jumped out and had her little pink beach bucket shovel helping me out.....for a minute. then she looked at me and said "thats a lot of sand daddy!" she promptly got back inside to where she could hang out the window to cheer me on to keep on digging!
I wish I would have taken pics of it all but there was too much sand flying around and I didnt want to damage it.

I think next time I will try to go up to corolla and check out the wild horses. A friend of mine lives on hwy 12 near there so I will just stay at her place and make a weekend of it.

Im not discouraged at all!

There are a few threads here about corolla if you want to search for tips and/or see some pics. I've been there twice and never had any problems, although I've seen many Wranglers, Grand Cherokees, Cherokees, etc. stuck there. I run Yoko Advan S.T.'s in 225/55/17. A nice steady speed in the deep stuff helps.

Also try lowering down to 15-18. Good luck and don't give up!

I was down near there July 4th week but I was reluctant to take the FXT out to Oregon Inlet. Maybe next year. What did you use for a recovery point? Everything on my 04 FXT seems to be under the bumper and I'm worried I would damage it if I needed to be pulled out.
