For those who keep saying the Jag is a rebadged or upmarket Mondeo, suggest you actually sit in one and try it before continuing the journalist originated BS, very little bar the basic (perfectly good) body structure is carried over.

OK, if you were 30 yrs old which would it be ?
Two young professionals, career minded, one 14 month old child, might ? have another later, both 29/30 yrs old. Need second car as a family car, commute (40 mile round trip country B and A roads), family visits (100 mls round trip), want the space. Approx 15/17k mls per year
So decided ... estate and diesel.
Is it...
2007 Skoda VRS estate, all the trimmings 54 K mls fsh etc....
or
2006 Jaguar X type estate 42 K mls fsh etc
Both same price.
I said the Jag would be the better buy over a 4/5 yr period ( that is what they think) as it would hold it's value better, but then I am not a 30 something !!!!

As much as I love Jaguar, I'd have taken the Skoda. It's the wrong Jag, and the Skoda is an excellent car. In fact, as Subaru has left the original Forester concept I have my eyes on the Skoda Yeti as a possible candidate for my next car.
i would stay away from anything VAG made, they are remarkably good at making nice shiney cars full of of cheap and nasty parts. Go for the Jag.
Not sure what all this Mondeo bashing is about. It's an excellent car in itself. It's reliable, comfortable, handles well and anything based on any part of it is bound to be great.

vRS would be cheaper to maintain/service and looks more sporty. I looked at it before getting the Forester.
GET THE JAG.... the 2007 Skoda VRS is ugly... well mabye cus im not used to seein them here in the US.
Not sure i could live with myself if every time i looked down at the steering wheel there was a SKODA badge looking back. It may have good engine and be fast, but a turd sprinkled with gold dust is still a turd.

CR-V II CDTi (06-56reg) is a fantastic family car.
Done 50k in last 3 yrs as our 2nd car - 40mpg mixed driving, good turn-of-pace and with Michelin Latitudes (Hello Costco - set of 4 was £300 during one of their 6-monthly promotions) at each corner it actually handles well in dry and wet with less roll than the Bridgestones it came with.
I used to mock families driving about in similar vehicles, but they are much more convenient than regular estates for putting single/double buggies in the back, and for getting junior(s) into their seats without slipping a disc.
Also, the part-time 4wd actually works tremendously well in the recent (and current!) snow.
Not as ugly as the current car, but still a good drive and good value for money in my opinion.
If I hadn't looked at one while sniffing about Legacies and Accords, I'd still be none the wiser.

No, not interior. Engine parts. I have a friend with an 09 plate diesel Golf. It's had two new water pumps and a new fuel pump. Another friend has an Audi that eats front wishbones and the central locking doesnt work whenever it rains. It's a myth that VAG make quality cars. They dont, they just make over priced cars that people think are quality because of the price.VAG has cheap and nasty interior :crazy: I've heard it all now.. :N_poke:

-2 engine rebuilds
-new turbo + induction pipework
-recon gearbox
-clutch
-fly wheel
-new ECU
-brake switch
-gear linkage
-2 batteries
-accelerator transducer
Its now in the repair shop, because the handbrake popped off and rolled down the hill into an office block!
I have litterally just found a recall for the handbrake on the VOSA web-site! (im guessing it ever got done!)
my advice would be never to by a VW

-fly wheel
-new ECU
-brake switch
-gear linkage
-2 batteries
-accelerator transducer
Its now in the repair shop, because the handbrake popped off and rolled down the hill into an office block!

i have had 2 (old school) Golfs, and a scirocco GT-II. I now have a 1972 Beetle. These are fantastic cars!
however the new stuff rolling out of the factory seems to be over priced, and very un reliable.
its time to change my Van now, especially after this has happened. so if anybody has any good van recommendations please let me know. I was looking at the Renault , Nissan, Vauxhall vans (theo ones that all look the same) i heard they were all built by renault which puts me off a bit, but it cant be any worse that the Transporter surely!

Skoda has a good reputation down here in contrast to the Jag which is considered an upperclass less reliable marque for people with time and money to spend in repair time between the luxurious rides.
But since you are living at the Jaguar's homecountry you should have no hard time finding decent support.
The Octavia is a very usual Taxi car here and we do not hear of any serious mishaps. I think Skoda is better overall value than VW.

broke down in the centre lane of a roundabout on the A27 near chichester this morning!
It only came out of the repair shop on monday, and now its back in! - this van has to go!
