Does anyone know if it is possible to change the oil filter without draining the oil? I started an oil change only to discover that the filter I could have sworn I purchased had vanished, so refilled with new oil but didn't change out the filter. I'd like to change it, but am not keen on re-draining the oil, and since the filter is up top, it seems like it might make a small mess but nothing untenable. Advice?

It won't make a mess. Makes no difference if motor oil has been drained first or not since the filter is on top. No worries....

If it has set for more than 10 minutes all the oil has already drained out. There will be very little left to make a mess. Go ahead and change the filter out.
