So I've owned my forester for a year now and I still am not sure if the auto dimmer works. It doesn't seem like it because cars behind me are still super bright at night time. Has anyone else had this issue or resolved it?

Yep, it is. Last night I noticed it was on and working like a charm. I usually drive in the city at night but I was on a dark highway and I wasn't getting blinded as people passed me

Depending on the lights of the guy in back...it does seem at times that it isn't working. But it is.

There is a light sensor on the front and back. It dims if it receives more light on the rear sensor than the front.

Cover the front sensor with your finger, wait and watch to see if it dims. It's not super fast, could be 10 seconds or so.

If you have tinted windows you probably won't get much action out of the mirror as well, but it is needed less then anyways.

Oh, and when I say front and back I'm referring to front and back of the car, not front and back of the mirror.
