Overheating?

Temperature gauge reading?
Blowing coolant?

HG failure can be either internal or external.

Internal=exhaust port to coolant port. Coolant to oil.

External=signs of coolant outside the engine.

Don't be fooled into thinking the t-stat is stuck closed. The lower hose where the t-stat is located can feel cold even during an episode of overheating since the circulation has been disrupted.

Less expensive things to try first

Replace/remove t-stat
replace rad cap
