Greetings all. I’m in the middle of caravaning from Virginia to Texas and my stepson’s Forester is giving him problems. We replaced a cracked radiator yesterday and drove 500 miles. Towards the end of the day, his car started to overheat and rather than pull over, he drove for about 10 minutes with the temperature gauge pegging hot. As you might imagine, at the very least we have gasket problems. It’s Sunday and the Fourth of July falls this week so we may be in Chattanooga for a while trying to get the car repaired. I will scan the forum for local shops and would greatly appreciate any recommendations.

What year forester are you driving?

Unfortunately in its the only one in the immediate area...
Fortunately, because you have a Subaru Dealership in the area...

I couldn't locate a Subaru "only" independant shop in Chattanooga.

I appreciate the attempt from down under but I’m pretty solid at googling where a dealership is, LOL. We did find a local specialist and, financially, the car is not worth getting fixed. So, unfortunately, it seems my tenure here at the Subaru form is very short-lived. Thanks for the assist.

10 mins of driving with the Temp needle in the red would have more than likely cooked the engine. Was that the diagnosis?

That was the diagnosis unfortunately. But, we decided to get the car hauled the rest of the way and channel our inner shade tree mechanic to see if we can install a JDM motor ourselves.

@ccryan67 If your mechanic can install a replacement engine for your Stepson, he may also like to look into something cheap like an Ultragauge, or similar scan tool to monitor the temp more closely.
The UltraGauge can also monitor a lot of other sensors that have been fitted installed in his Subaru via the OBDII.
