of the Deutsche Uberwagen school of motoring but my sister sent me to a local garage to look at a car for her and they had an Audi RS6 estate. Presumably because of it's less than admirable fuel consumption it was quite affordable. So I looked on autotrader and there's plenty to be had at less than £20k and I have to admit I is sorely tempted. At those prices that is a awful awful lot of car for the money.

And I have to admit they played very well last night. Germany that is.

So - talk me out of it :mob:

Surely the running costs must be comparable to the Foz? Insurance may be more. I'd love an RS. A close friend has the RS4. Awesome but naff all room in back seat area.

They are great cars but have you considered the running costs?
No way the costs must be comparable to the Forester.

Edit: the <20k ones are at least 7 years old now so would need suspension and clutches changed probably which would cost a few $$$$

Next time you see an A4 Tdi S line, take a long, hard look at the driver... you could be tarred with the same brush. Having said that, Nick Mason off of Pink Floyd had one and it is an RS6 - 400+ bhp ;o)

Oh I freely admit that I can't afford one. Trouble is that doesn't usually stop me.

The fuel economy will be worse no doubt but the Foz is not exactly economical. Insurance isn't much worse. Those big bills for servicing are mainly whats' putting me off and the fact that I know a guy who used to work for Audi and told me there are some reliability issues with the suspension and the camshafts. 2 Days labour at £££££££££ per hour plus parts to swap in a new set of cams - :icon_frown:

Perhaps I'll just drive one and see. Maybe I won't like it. Or seeing as how they seem to plummet in value after 3 years or so perhap I'll wait to see if the newer V10 one does the same.

Over here, Autoweek magazine had a one year long-term test of an R8.

They tried to put the best face on it, but it was basically a disaster - spent weeks in the shop, couldn't diagnose the problems "carbon on the throttle body" replaced at great expense with no cure, and called in specialist from HQ - "must be carbon on the OTHER throttle body too!"

Give me a break, it is even too complex for their own experts......

Zose crazy Germans - putting a Lambo engine in a shooting brake. It's just asking for trouble.

Is that the 4.2 litre one? I know a bloke who is getting rid of a fairly newish one that he bought from Ebay because he couldnt resist it at the price it was. He soon realised why it was so cheap. I cant remember what exactly is wrong with it but the fuel gauge didnt work along with some more of the dash electrics. He says it a hoot to drive but is supremely thirsty when you hoon it and it breaks down a lot.

Audi + Porsche = marriage made in (minimal krautrock) heaven

Audi + Lamborghini = no need to answer question

Magnum would be more fun, more reliable (and cheaper??) to run. (I am a convert)

See I don't expect that because it's German (they bombed our chippy) and because it was 50 grand plus new.

I've gone off the whole idea now anyway. I'm so fickle. And I filled up the Foz this morning and realised that the Audi has a 17 gallon tank that would probably take me no further.

We can put a man on the moon but we can't invent an economical turbo
V8.

I hope I can add to this, as i've just changed from a 02 reg S6 into an MY06 2.5XT.

The S is an awesome care, 4.2l V8 is more than enough with 340bhp, the RS at 450 is more so, the RS6 plus is 480 out of the box. I tried to convince the wife when someone crashed into the side of the S6 I needed the RS but got over-ruled as the kitchen needs doing.

S and RS is 16/17 MPG general driving, it might pop over into the very low 20's on a long and sedate m-way journey and barely into the teen's if your having a bit of fun. I used to get about 250 miles from a 70 litre tank

Insurane is not too bad, nearly all have trackers and the security system is top notch.

best car i've ever owned bar none, and i've had a number of good cars. (funnily enough, can never quite come away from the flat four burble though!) speced up to the eyeballs, including a solar powered sunroof which trickle charges the battery when stationary and the best sound system (Bose) i've come across in any car, and better than some houses!

Best thing about it though is the noise, right foot on the floor and the window down gives and awesome noise, mine had a non-resonating miltek system full exhaust system and sounded like a norse god gargling boulders.

Audi need to start putting the 2.5 (USDM Passat) 5 cylinder turbo into more cars IMHO... as far as I am aware just in the TTRS with 340hp, 30mpg, 221 g/km (£245 tax)..
