This is my second thread today, probably in the wrong forum as well but hey, I would like my fellow brits to see these mods:biggrin:

I haven't taken any step by step pictures as when I work on a project I get stuck in and forget about the camera, I just keep going until it's finished. So these are finished product pictures I suppose.

Here is a short list of the mods I've done. (Mainly convenience) Not much point in some of these mods but they are fun all the same.

Spoiler
Carputer + Reverse Camera
Remote control horn
Remote control parking lights
Orange LED lighting (Foot wells, Behind the rear view mirror)
Auto Dimming Rear View Mirror
Reverse Light switch

Planned Future mods:
Front view camera
Mesh Grill
Not sure of anything else yet

Nothing serious here, just silly mods.

Now I suppose I should explain what some of these mods mean/do.

Carputer(Car computer)
This is basically a netbook (Asus EEEPC 700 2G Surf). I have installed windows XP on so I can do what I want on it:icon_biggrin:. The EEEPC is under the passenger seat.

I ordered a 7" LCD Touchscreen from ebay (£130) to mount in the dashboard (using the oem dashboard bit that replaces the top glove box)
The LCD has a VGA cable (to laptop) USB (for the Touchscreen) and 3 RCA connectors.
These are AV1 Video(Yellow) AV1 Audio(Red) and AV2(Yellow, no audio)
There is also a 12 + and GND and a Remote wire (Switch to AV2 when 12+ in going in)

Obviously the VGA and USB are plugged into the laptop. The RCA (AV2) is for the reverse Camera.

12v Reverse Camera. I ordered this from ebay also. You get the camera itself, a Power wire and RCA extension (I dont need the RCA will explain why).
Now for this mod and another mod, I needed a set of wires to go from the front of the car to the back. I used CAT5 Network cable. This has 8 wires inside, plenty of wires for me to use. There won't be much load at all on these wires so it should be ok, and so far it is.

2 Wires are connected to the 12+ and GND from the LCD(to power the camera).

2 more wires are for the RCA signal(which is why I didn't need the RCA provided as I had made my own.)

2 More wires are for the remote wire on the LCD. I used the the camera 12v+ supply to trigger this with a relay when the Reverse lights switch on. The relay is powered by the Reverse lights. So when the car is put into reverse, the LCD automatically switches to AV2, which is the rear camera. Nice and simple.
The camera itself I have "bluetacked" ( for now ) to the high brake light facing down. This gives me a good view directly behind the car.

The last 2 wires I used for something else, reverse light mod.

Don't you hate it when you someone so far up your cars *** that you can the drivers nose hairs in the rear view mirror?
Well I do, and here is my solution. I've Hooked up a button to my reverse lights, when pressed, they are on.Simple. Now watch that nobber brake and stay away from your car from now on! great mod.

To do this, I used the last 2 wires in that CAT5 cable. at the front they are connected to a button which I mounted near the key barrel next to the Foglight / CC / Light Washer switches.
Now at the back I connected these to a relay and the 12v+ from the rear Cig Light Socket. When pressed, the relay clicks over. Now Using the same 12v+ I connected this to the Relays switch terminal, the other I connected to the reverse lights +. So when the button is pressed, it clicks the relay over, thus turning on the lights. Funnily enough, when I press it, it also triggers the other relay, causing the LCD to switch to AV2, somewhat useful:biggrin:

Remote Control Horn /Parking lights.
This is a relatively simple mod. I ordered a 4 channel RF receiver from ebay. This is basically a PCB with 4 20A relays, Each activate on a separate button on the remote. Now all I did here was splice into the parking light and horn wires, and connect them to a relay each. Now the parking lights are on a relay (out of 2) that toggle on/off on a button press. The horn (1 out of the other 2 relays) is connected to a relay that turn on with a pressed and off on release. Fun when people are too close for comfort to your car. Or need light and you car happens to be nearby.

Now I must admit, the parking lights are not great for light compared to the headlights. the reason I didn't simply connect these up is because of the low side switching employed by the circuits to the headlights. I won't go into details, but it is not safe for me to splice into these and put them on a relay as potentially it can short out if in a certain condition so I don't want to risk that. Was thinking about the fogs or put some AUX lights on the front solely to I can have them on a remote. But il see how it goes.

Orange LED lighting.
This is just some orange LEDs I got out of a gaming keyboard. They are nice and bright and I have placed them in strategic places to light up the foot wells and Dashboard(behind the rear view mirror facing down) without blinding me. Orange /red are good colours at night as they don't affect your night vision. This is a pointless, 17 year old new driver kind of mod but, I like it, it's not light they are bright blue neons! it's a warm orange glow.

Auto Dimming mirror. This is a Mirror that i'm sure most of you are aware of so I won't explain what it is.
I may have forgotten a couple of things...
I have posted some pictures, I apologise for the lack of organisation here. If you have any questions about any of this i'l be happy to answer. Some of this stuff is in no way useful I realise, but i thought i'd show you what i've done in the month iv owned my forester:icon_cool:

All you need now is the smoke screen generator and oil slick device and you're away ;o)

I do like a good gadget or two in the car - esp. the reverse light mod... I can think of a few times on my commute where that would come in useful!

I had it on my old 306. I had a stork that was used with the stock stereo to adjust the volume and fast forward/rewind (tape player:biggrin:) Since I changed the Head Unit and didn't have any use for it I connected the rewind up to the reverse lights. I really liked that so I had to have it on the foz!

My friend who now has that 306 loves that mod! I left it wired up for her! she has a thing for road rage!

With your 7" screen, did you need a special cage to fit it? I have a new OEM Nav housing to replace my storage bit with a view to fit a Kenwood DNX9240BT into it. Was it easy?

Mine is not really mounted properly, its sorta wedged. I'l see if I can take a picture soon, 1 problem I have is I can't reach the buttons on the LCD itself as the bezel blocks access to them. Which is why I don't have it mounted properly yet. I have a IR remote that came with the LCD, so if I can get the IR sensor on the LCD out or have it showing somehow this won't be a problem. Haven't worked this bit out yet. But it's ok for now.

lcd mount

What i've done for now is glue 2 pieces of plastic on either side of the bezel. These act as a sort of sleeve for the screen as i have shown in 1 of the pictures.

The LCD comes with a housing you can house the screen in. I have also shown this in 1 of the pictures. With the LCD inside this housing, the 2 pieces of plastic can be wedged between the housing and the screen. This is all i'm doing for now as I need to work out the blocked buttons issue. It;s nice and securely wedges so it won't fall off when touching the screen.
As you can tell from the pictures I used superglue for the plastic sleeves! looks very messy.

Also the OEM dashboard part i'm using,

comes with mounting brackets that screw into the hole left when removing the storage area. Presumably this is to mount the NAV system? Anyway, these brackets are close enough to where the LCD sits, the LCD can be wedged between them also, which is what I did before, but it left a gap at the sides of the LCD so it looks messy. How ever with the housing on the LCD, these act as a sort buffer to stop it falling in the hole.

Nice... I'm a gadget person too... ;-)

I've been thinking about doing some interior 'courtesy' LEDs for when the doors open like in the wife's Modus, where did you tap into the wiring? Is it linked to the doors opening etc?

It's actually linked to the cig light socket behind the plug, with an on off switch.
Its like an interior light while dricing, it;s not to bright at all, but its enough.
