I changed out a lot of my incandescent bulbs with LEDs awhile ago. I had some issues with the exterior lights staying on (dimly) and causing excessive battery drain. I cured it by mixing LED and incan bulbs.

It wasn't a good solution so I removed all of the cheap led bulbs and replaced them with Diode Dynamic LEDs.

Now I have this problem. If I don't turn off my headlights before I shut down the engine, the rear lights will stay on, but will be dim. If I turn off the headlight switch before I shut off the ignition, they will go off. If they are on, the only way to get them off is turn the ignition back on, turn off the headlight switch, then shut the ignition off. If I just turn the headlight switch off, they will stay on. This will drain the battery down if I don't run it for a couple of days.

Any ideas of what might be wrong? Has anybody ese had an issue like this?

Thanks Bobby, I remember that thread. I had hoped switching out to high quality LEDs would solve the issue. Looks like that's a no. I'll call @Diode Dynamics and see what they say. Sounds like I won't be the first to ask the question. I had looked at their webpage, but they don't have any "tech Support" areas.

Good thing I didn't throw away my incandescent bulbs.

Weird. In my 2007 XS I switched all external lights to LED except for turn signals, headlamps, and fogs, and everything worked properly. I used Philips bulbs.

I'm going to start doing some swapping to see if I can get it to stop. I'll start with the back turn signals.

Some progress. Maybe.

I ordered some incandescent turn signal bulbs to eliminate them as a culprit. I removed the rear turn signal housing and guess what? These is already an incan bulb in there. Plan A bites the dust!

So plan B is to remove the last two "Amazon guarantied canbus compatible" LED bulbs, over the license plate. So I turn on the car, turn on the light switch then turn off the car. As usual, the back lights still glow. Except for the two "Amazon guarantied canbus compatible" LED bulbs. So I remove one of the LEDs and replace it with an incandescent bulb. The incan bulb glows! I remove the second LED and put in the incan bulb, but it doesn't glow. I look at the first one and it's off! I look at the tail lights and they are off. It was still daylight when I did this so I'll celebrate as soon as the sun goes down.

Now I wonder if I replace the incan bulbs with Diode Dynamic bulbs, will they come back on or not? Guess I'll wait until their next sale and see.

@2.5x_sleeper No and I have held off calling them until I had all of the "other" LEDs out of the system. All that I have now is incandescent bulbs and Diode Dynamic LEDs. It appears the issue might be resolved.

Now I will start adding more LEDs and see if it starts back up again. I'll add the two for the license, but I don't want to spend $9 to ship $8 worth of LEDs. I'm cheap. I'll wait for the next time they have a sale.

My budget kind of got busted by the head gasket leak repair.

It'd be interesting to look at the schematic of the Philips and DD products and compare them with schematics for whatever else you had in there, to see what was causing the problem.

I'd like to see the schematics too. I'm still looking for a good explanation on canbus or what ever Subaru uses in their lighting systems.
