(Redone February 2016)

Hey guys! My names michael and this is my STI swapped 2001 Forester STI. Im a part time subaru tuner and owner of MKtuned. My day job is involved in the chemical industry. The car was purchased in fall of 2010 as a completely stock blue-ridge pearl 2001 Forester L.

In its first year of ownership, i did the basics. Suspension work, intake, catback and some cosmetic upgrades.

I had some really big plans in the works. There were a number of users from here that had done full WRX-STI swaps on the SF5 chassis before.... Rob S, Angry Toaster.... and a few more. After doing allot of research and thinking, i decided i wanted to pursue this same path back in 2011. A shop in Northern NJ offered to do the swap (Later found to have done the project wrong, having to do the swap all over again) but the task would be difficult . This didnt scare me and i was determined to make this work. While i gathered the necessary parts, i also sourced some nice JDM parts such as a hood and grill.

The project was on the ground running by january 2012. It was a basic setup that made around 350hp at the wheels.

Due to how many shortcuts were taken the first time around, the engine suffered a complete seizure (No oil flow). Professional root cause failure analysis pinpointed a clogged oil pickup due to excessive use of liquid gasket when the oil pan was installed. This was devestating to say the least. By January 2013, things were bleak for the FSTI project and i was one signature away from selling the car off to someone else who would make right with it. My now wife, (GF at time) convinced me to keep the car and, like a phoenix from the ashes, make it whole again. Next came a New motor, new wiring harness, proper 6-spd swap components and a bigger turbo.

Everything from this point on only got better for my passion and the car. By 2013, i was comfortable and proficient enough to not only dynotune my own car, but this is when MKtuned started to take a hold and i gathered a small client base. The car had its bugs here and there as we found little issues along the way, but nothing ever major. Fast forward to late 2014 and i had the motor torn down for some even more goodies. A fully bottom end, built up heads and a bigger Blouch turbo.

Come 2015, and the focus on the car was a track oriented suspension approach. With huge help from user MotorBykeMike, i turned it into a track going wagon.

So, in 2016 the car is still as fun as it ever was in years past. It changed so immensely and has been a large part of my life ever since.

Nice start.
Save your money on the header though and just get a replica from Ebay for ~$120, they'll probably even last longer than a real Borla in the NJ winters.

i really need to see what an actual borla one looks like.

well, after enlarging the holes a bit on mine, either side slipped in just fine.

It looks exactly the same but the metal they make them out of is very thin and rusts right through.

My only issue with the EBAY brand ones is the fact that... is it Unequal legnth or equal? The Borla i may get is listed as UEL, and the ebay ones dont really have a listing. Although ... i have an idea of what UEL vs ELH would look like... my guess is that the OBX brand, with the Passenger side exit that has a loop before it meets up to the Drivers side tubes would be considered Equal legnth, yes? , whereas the others look similiar to the borla in which the passenger side goes straight to the cat's flange, whereas the drivers must travel farther to reach.

Edit:

For suspesnsion, from Boxer4Racing, i just ordered:

-Cusco front strut bar
-Cusco Rear strut bar
-Cusco rear subframe brace
-Whiteline subframe Lock bolts.

cant wait to get those badboys installed!

Next paycheck will go towards an adjustable rear swaybar upgrade, and ill hold off on the Front sway bar until i do the header, because it looks as if it must come off to get it around and off.

what coils are going to get?
Right now my heart's set on BC racing. They make a fully adjustable set with adjustable dampening as well, and offer it in a fairly soft spring rate for street / occassional track use. This is great, because i want to keep the car as a daily driver, have the abilitiy to raise or lower it, and not have my butt hurt after a car ride of more than 20 minutes. And also, have the ability to set all 4 coils to a stiffer setting for those weekend track days, or back road spirited drives.

I dont plan to get any nor install them until march/april until the winter is over. Perhaps ill get them during the winter and put them aside, but i dont want to put them on in the middle of a snowy winter

, but first things first, im getting a whole new exhaust (header, cat, catback) after these suspension upgrades, get some more power out of the engine.

As far as the driveline is concerned, Uncle scottys cocktail has my transmission shifting smoother than butter (quiet as a mouse too) with a fairly recent OEM clutch replacement from the previous owner.

The OBX headers on Ebay are EL but that's not the one I was referring to.
These:
1997-2007 SUBARU LEGACY GT 2.5L T304 SS EXHAUST HEADER: eBay Motors (item 190462648266 end time Nov-06-10 18:00:28 PDT)
are replicas of the Borla header and are UEL.

My suspension parts shipped, im really excited!

My next question is....

The company Primative sells a front subframe (4 point) chassis brace for the 2001 subaru 2.5Rs .... Now my question is... will this fit my 2001 forester? I ask this because the 2.5rs of the same year shares the same parts, such as some suspension components, front strut tower bar fitmet, motor and exhaust things, ect, to the best of my knowledge.

Thank you! I really appreciate the input. I was somewhat on the fence about it, but after really thinking it over, and some photoshop work to gain an idea of what it'd look, i decided to go ahead and give it a try.

Next mod will be window tint, sometime soon. Get the rear 5 windows tinted out.

Ok, so the front and rear strut bars are installed and bopy what a difference they make.

My next question is... my rear subframe lock bolts wont thread in (properly) to the rear... the bolt holes are very rusted out. Off the top of your head(s) , what size tap/dye must i use to re-thread the hole? I played it safe and didnt continue the install because of this issue.
