2003 Forester X 2.5, 5 speed manual. There is a mechanical whirring noise coming definitely from my driveline. Everything is fine and no issues until about the first 10 miles. Then there’s this ‘whirring’ noise and the axles torque bind at full lock turns, almost like a bad CV. I’ve done some research into this and the most common culprit is the ‘center diff’ which seems to be an issue for the automatic cars because there’s posts about them all over the place, but I can’t seem to find any info on the manual cars having this problem. Is this something that can be fixed by gutting the trans and rebuilding it, or does it need a whole new trans (because what I’m getting from other posts is the center diff is part of the trans) however even though it’s noisy and tight parking lot turns feel weird I still have AWD and the car does 100 mi of commuting a day with out so much as a complaint.
