<Somewhere> I had heard that if one's Subaru has been worked on at a dealership, that any dealer could search on the VIN and pull up the history of work done (at any dealership). I was trying to find out if the timing belt on the used 2006 Foz I bought last fall had been changed. Stopped at one, who said they had no record. Called the one it was sold from, and they said if it hadn't been in in the last 4 years, they wouldn't have a record on it. The guy said something about changing to new computer systems.

Anybody had any luck with this concept? Just curious whether this was a lazy employee, or what.

I'm taking tomorrow off, weather will be nice, doing the belt, idlers and water pump just to be safe.

Many shops will put a sticker on the underneath side of the hood indicating that the timing belt has been changed. Take a look if you haven't already. You may also want to pull a CarFax which often includes maintenance records in its history.
