I have been following the comments and posts re' Maf/fuel etc from the past few days as I think it may be time to do something.
Driving style hasn't changed....I just have the feeling/sense that fuel consumption is rising. I have never been one to take figures but I just have the sense that I am seeing the needle drop quicker than it used to. Air filter is now the Subaru oem dry one, ditched the oil one miles back. Hot wire maf has been sprayed with cleaner but more in hope than anything else. Car has 105k on the clock.
So, where-what-how-who etc..... maf is.. Purple 22680 A36-613 R80
8612A

Are ebay style ones OK or does it have to be oem/main dealer ?
Is there an after market make ?
Who sells 'em at the best price ?

Any ideas then please feel free !

Cheers

Brian

Cheers Don.

The maf is the F purple one so I know it has to be a purple replacement.

Number is 22680 AA280 in the first box of the label and A36-613 R80 in the second top box. Underneath is 8612A.

What I am not sure of is how far down the list the numbers HAVE to match. Lots of ebay have the 22680 AA280 bit but not the A36-613 R80 . I assume the 8612A is just a batch number ?

I will buy new, not going to trust a second hand one but it is 'what fits' ? Guess the emails to the various sellers/specialists will be flying soon.

Cheers

Brian

What year engine is your car?

For the later ones, you can buy the 'bits'.

Brian,

AFAIK all you need is the 22680 AA280 part which is the Subaru part no.

I too am seeing a quicker drink to miles ratio in my MY01 S-Turbo (177bhp). 109,000 miles on the odo'. It could be because I am doing more short runs, because the ambient air temperature is lower (?) or because I am driving harder, which I'm not. I am consciously driving with a light right foot - two weeks after buying the SF5, I was shocked at fuel consumption, so quickly learnt to drive with a huge amount of anticipation for what's happening ahead, try to stay off the stop pedal etc etc.

I am returning approx 240-280 miles between brimming the tank and refilling as soon as the light come son. At 60 quid a go this is killing our bank balance.

Oddly I get FAR better mileage at 70 on the M'way using cruise control, approx 350 out of a tank; still pretty sh1t...

How can I diagnose a faulty MAF sensor Don..??

cheers

Mike

EDIT:

Just viewed http://www.subaruforester.org/vbulletin/f75/340-miles-tank-68659/ and realise that what i am seeing seems to be the norm amongst us Fozzers. SH1T!!!!! No wonder the missus preferred the HR-V LOL!

The Purple MAF costs £250 from the main dealer. I ended up getting a second hand one for £15 which works fine. Cleaning the old one did bugger all!

My O2 sensor went (failed MOT) and when the new one was put in my MPG increased from 23 mpg to 27mpg.

Many thanks for the links Don. All this cold starting, short runs and town driving DRINKS fuel.

After extensive reading on here, I can defintiely say no rough idle, no hesitation when I mash the pedal to the carpet (autobox) so can I safely presume the MAFS OK? I have read on here that 00-01MY MAFs are "prone to failure at 50,000" but reluctant to spunk a hundred or so on a new one unless necessary. I cannot be clear if the above statement only refers to 167bhp models.

Well, off to The lakes this weekend, over the Snake Pass then Mway as far as J36 so I will report on fuel consumption on my return.

Thanks again Don for your expert opinion.

For the MY01 when the drive line changed, the maf changed as well to a 22680AA310 which is used in the SG5XT as well.

The statement above refers to the earlier 99-00 model years.

Not that I know what I'm talking about but would not a a/f sensor do more for the fuel economy then a maf sensor? or do both have some part to play in that?

Hol,

No pictures involved.

I was just pointing out that at the end of all of Brian's posts his signature includes the model and year

"1998 T/tb auto"

Whether this gets filtered by your internet server ???????
