I have a '06 Forester X, base 2.5 w/160K miles. Just started using a small amount of coolant, and has been dripping oil off the filter for 3 years. I had replaced timing belt ONLY at 100K,

Dealer wants $1600 for HG replacement, a la carte parts prices for parts from there for belt/idlers/water pump etc.

I'd appreciate any experience at this mileage and situation if you've been there. I realize the real answer is replace everything. Dealer says they only replace what doesn't sound/feel right on inspection? It's a reputable dealer, they said they don't wholesale replace water pump etc. and don't feel it's necessary. Of course no guarantee on anything that might fail that they said was OK.

Even better, any experience in the Lehigh Valley (Allentown) PA area?

Thanks in advance.

If you have it all apart you replace everything you can because for instance if the water pump fails then you have spend the same amount of money on labor again for just one part.

Now as to whether or not it needs a HG have the cooling system pressure tested. Is their any visible leaks at the heads? Any mixing with the oil?

Ask Area1320 if they can get you a quote, they are the valley's Subbie specialist. Did some maintenance work for me in the past. I use Jeff's Automotive hear in Easton for all the things I can't do myself. Always honest to me at least.

Subie in Palmer

I have had some reputable work done at a Subaru specialty shop in Moore Township - head gasket overhaul, etc..Also went to Jeffs, recommend them as well. Please post if you need further info..

The real answer is not necessarily replace everything. Why are you considering a HG job for a small amount of coolant loss? IMHO, it's not necessary unless there's a specific reason. These HG's usually weep for years externally, and you just need to check the coolant level every once in awhile.

As far as the WP and idlers, I have no idea why dealerships in SE PA only want to do T-belt only changes. I actually had a service rep get snotty with me when I asked how much it would cost to have the WP changed.

If it were me and i planned to keep this car for a long time, the body was in good shape, and wanted to be proactive, I would probably have everything (HG's, T-belt, idlers, WP) replaced at 180,000mi and have a valve job done while they're there..... just realize that you're spending a lot of money on a car that wont pay you back if it ever gets totaled.
