Just got a 2018 Forester. Previously had a 2016 Crosstrek and also have a 2018 Legacy. The rear windows in the Legacy and Crosstrek go *all the way* down. Not in Forester--only about 3/4 the way down? My poor little pooch has to stretch his neck like E.T to look out. Is this a safety feature? Can it be turned off? I don't really see how it could be a safety feature, a kid could still easly get out. What am I missing here?

This has to do with the shape of the door, there isn't enough room for a "full" window to retract all the way down. Some designs get around this limitation by splitting the rear glass... leaving a fixed 1/4 section. :icon_eek:

Space limitation as mentioned. Notice how the cars with rear window go all the way down has an extra partition on the door window itself, so essentially only the front half of door window can be opened.

Okay I'm eating pizza and has nothing else to do, so...

I thought it was a child safety thing.. Child safety window, and I saw somewhere, not here I dont think, that there is a way to bypass it. Not electronically but pulling door cards and doing something there!

@jzmtl ,
Nice explanation... Even a diagram.
As far as a way to bypass the impossible to overcome space constraint, I'm wondering how that "door card" trick enables the magic folding glass...
If the same trick could work in an airplane, everyone in economy could have 10 feet of legroom.... and dogs in Foresters would have fully open windows... but they don't.

Have you pulled off the door card so you could watch the window mechanism operate? I'm going to guess the actual hardware extends pretty deep, deeper than the glass.

One way (only way?) to do it to your Forester:
1 - Remove inside rear door panel(s).
2 - Remove rear window(s) hardware.
3 - Remove rear window(s).
Result: Fully open rear window(s)!
To close window(s), repeat steps in reverse order.
Result: Fully closed rear window(s)!

Alternative: Buy a car with windows that roll down fully because there is room.
