Hi,
Any particular advices how to break in new 2.0 Forester. I have 300km on it, so far drivingit moderatly, not too fast(over4500rpm) but not too slow either (going trough some snowy climbs).
Do I have to look out for engine only or also other parts-gearbox,suspension etc.

My dealer recomends firs chek in and oil change at 5000km, sekond at 15000 and then every 15000km

So far every thing great except rubber smell sometimes(supposevly from engine factory protectant) and high fuel consumption (cca 13 l per 100 km, city driving).

Follow Subaru's recommendations. Keep the RPMs below 4000 for the first 1k miles. Try to vary RPMs on the highway. Gas mileage will be bad for the first several thousand miles, until the motor breaks in.

do first oil change at 1500 KM (about 1000 miles)

every 15000km??? that is about 10000 miles

oil change for every 10000 miles...this is crazzzzzzzy :crazy:

Arthrogian + don't use cruise control for first 2000 mi

Why ? For 15000km oil change intervals, to little aor too much?

15000km is way too much for a oil change. I think he meant an inspection every 15000 but I wouldn't go more than 5000 between oil changes.

My dealer just said don't redline it in the first 1000kms but besides that don't worry about it.

15000km is too much...

Remember you drive a car ( 5000 km is good to go), not a military tank (15000 km) :biggrin:

Break-in is a sensitive topic for some.

Your car is already broken in by now. First 100 miles are critical to set the rings, and keeping it under 4K won't do it. I load them up by accelerating up a hill, then letting off the gas and engine braking. I changed my oil at 800 miles. This is just my opinion and may not mean much with today's technology though. But, it works for me, that's all I know.

The rest of the car should hold up just fine. If it breaks now, it was faulty to begin with and should be replaced under warranty.

thanks.

around here usual service intervals are 20.000km for gasoline and 30.000 for diesel. prescribed by manufacturer, recommended less if mostly city driving.

i was already supprised by subarus 15.000km as a pretty frequent oil change, but of course will follow their recommendation or do it a little bit sooner as recommended here.

my car has 300km now, engine works perfect ,great linear acceleration even from 1.500rpm ( i was driving diesel before and did not expect such good elasticity from gasoline engine). as said, only thing bothering me is consuption (13-14l per 100 km in city, suburban 9.5 l per 100km)but hopefully it will go down as you said.
bothering me after reading your advices is weather to do first oil change at 1.500km , because than i expect to go on longer trip of approx.2000km highway (loaded car) driving.
also, when reading similar topic next to mine, i don't know weather to insist of rear (and front?) differential oil change at my dealers? they did not mention it, i did not ever change that in my previous cars (150.000km with each, but only front wheel drive)..

it's a great car, maybe i worry too much:shrug:

Yes, I heard that also. Don't change up gear, use engine breaking.

this is the not at all conservative way of breaking in.
Possibly the truth is somewhere in the big middle area(don't be overcautious and don't race it):icon_razz:

Factory installed break-in oil

I was told by my garage, to leave the factory oil in for 5,000km because Subaru uses break-in oil so no change of oil recommended before 5,000km.

That's unlikely. It probably has a reasonably high dose of moly though. I wouldn't worry about changing it at any time.

Subaru doesn't use break-in oil, but 5000 km sounds reasonable for the first oil change. That's barely over 3000 miles and in accordance with Subaru's US turbo vehicle recommendations. The first N/A oil change interval is actually 7500 miles in the US.

There is a big difference between the oil change in USA, than Europe. Here the usual change for gasoline engines is 15-20000 km. Even more.
In europe we use only full synthetic oils, than US where you use minerals.

Subaru Australia recommends 12,500km for oil changes including turbos (which use full synthetic) so 15,000km doesn't sound over the top.

I got my new 2010 Forester 2.5X premium today (Oct 2, 2010), I had to get home via highway, but the new car was too slow. I had to rev up to 5500 rpm to get only about 55 mph. When I got home, the car smelled of burning rubber. I am a little worried. It seems that the car can only do 25 mph if I drive gently. It only got 86 miles on it now. Any idea?

^^ Are you sure you didn't leave the parking brake on? I'm not trying to insult, but there has already been a couple of people who drove home with the parking brake on and experienced the same thing.

My first though is the same as Blue Fox, did you have the parking brake on?

Second, if you did have the parking brake off, did you have the transmission in manual mode (if you have the auto transmission)?

Unless something is seriously wrong, it should not have been that hard to go highway speed.
