When I had problems holding boost we suspected the solenoid and I was going to fit a 3 port one. During the process we plumbed the solenoid completely out of the loop (don't try this at home kids) and it didn't make a scrap of difference which means that the solenoid was holding up fine. As a result I still run the stocker at 1.6 bar max.
The problem was the BPV was leaking (see earlier comments about whacking it with a hammer).
Having said that there are people on here who'll tell you that they put a 3-porter on and it made a huge difference. This tells us that some are OK and some are flakey. How you tell if yours is good or bad.... My car was on a dyno when we plumbed it out so could safely be 'boost controlled ' by the throttle alone. I suppose the answer is cadge a 3-porter from someone and try it.
BTW what leads you to ask this question?
