I didn't know there was a choice but I was filling out a form on my 2001 Forester and it asked if I have a CVT. Maybe they meant CVT vs Manual?

If there are different auto transmissions how do you tell if it's CVT or not? My car feels like it's shifting like a traditional auto tranny

You may have a conventional auto, but definitely not a CVT which first came with the 2013-> SJ series.

ahhh thanks guys. a friend of mine sold me this car for $1 last fall. He inherited about a million dollars, two other cars and a house so the Subaru was not needed. He spent thousands trying to track down the overheating problem and then parked it for 2 years. The answer is this: keep coolant in the radiator and air bubbles away from the thermostat. Problem solved

OK, thanks. But definitely not for a 2001 Forester.
