So I notice that when I turn my brights on my fog lights go off. I am sure there is a reason Subaru designed it this way, possibly to save 'lectricity.

Anyways I am wondering if anyone knows an easy way to modify this so that my fog lights stay on with my low beams and my high beams. I suppose this would probably require running a wire from the high beam power wire to the fog lamp, and possibly also require adding a diode or 2. I was hoping somebody who has done this before could chime in with some words of wisdom.

Also, does anyone know where I can find some decent wiring diagrams? The ones in my Chilton manual kind of suck.

BTW, my vehicle is a 2002 Subaru Forester.

The only issue with that is that it is against the law to have your fog lights on while your high beams are activated. Not sure of any reasonable explanation why you'd want to anyway. The fog lights are meant to shine down low when the high beams would be reflected back into your eyes, in the case of fog. If you have your high beams on, normally you're traveling at a high enough rate of speed that lighting the 15 feet in front of you won't matter.

As stated, its illegal to have the fogs and highbeams on at the same time. Just as its illegal to have driving lights on when only the low beams are on (at least here in BC). And its also counter productive.

If you need more lighting in front of you at higher speeds (highway driving), consider installing some driving lights. A properly installed light bar and driving lights is the way to go - and you won't contract your pupils from having too much light in your close field of vision.

The reason I am interested in doing this is that my high beams don't illuminate the road off to the sides very well when I am going around a sharp turn. True I don't need my high beams going around sharp corners but it would be nice to not have to flick my high beams off every time I go through a turn and back on when I am on a straightaway.

I was not aware that this is illegal, however; I never have been one to follow stupid laws. :biggrin:

AND!!! Yellow is best for fog or snow!!!:icon_wink:

SO......Leave the lights alone!!! It is Illegal to run both, why??? but it makes sense.

The reason fog lights are set low is because fog only appears above a foot or so from the ground. Therefore light penetrates much better and reflects back through the fog to your eyes. Again....Yellow is more effective for this!!!

Add a set of Aux. lights and aim them outwards!!!

Who said anything about snow or fog?

Aux lights might be the way to go but I was looking at not spending money.

ya, but what we are getting at is that it is illegal to run both your fogs and high beams, so in trying to save yourself some money, your just going to end up costing you more money due to tickets. and in most states checking the function of your headlights is done when you get an inspection, so when they notice that both sets of lights are on you fail

I agree with most everyone else that this is not the greatest idea, but there are no inspections in Californis, and no cop will ever give you a ticket for lighting issues here. Just doesn't happen... that's why there are far too many high-rise trucks and SUV's with retrofit HID kits that shine their low beams right into other drivers eyes, but I digress...

I have two words for the OP... cornering lights. Hella makes nice ones, I hear.

Hey, folks. This is getting too emotional. We're just talking about lights.

A useful capability? We've discussed this a lot here in the past, and we'll never reach agreement since we're all using our own subjective criteria. Me, I like the idea for use in twisty woodland roads where I want to see far ahead on the straightaways to avoid the moose, but see what I'm getting into in the few feet in front of me as I round the corners. I haven't actually made this mod yet, but it's on my list to do as part of a total rewiring of the whole front lighting. And there'll be a switch in there to make things legal come time for the annual inspection.

Ticket? Come now, no cop is ever going to observe something this inconspicuous.

I once had a US spec Audi that retained some of its original German wiring. This included the circuitry for cornering lights. With a couple of relays and a bit of wire I set up the fogs so that one side would come on when the blinker for that side was on. It was useful. That was when I lived in a state with no annual inspection!

State's vary on what is permitted with regard to forward lighting. Alaska law states that no more than 4 white forward lights may be illuminated at one time.

If you saw some of the Alaska State Trooper trucks and cars, long-haul truckers and many private owned vehicles with what we call "Moose Lights", there is no way that they would conform. The Alaska State Troopers break the law too.

A ticket for lighting (probably correctable) beats driving headlong into a moose at 70mph. You would be surprised as to just how stealthy a 1000lb, 7-8 foot tall critter can be. My son is running 4 Hella 500s on his Forester. With the headlights, fogs and Hellas; 8 white forward lights when illuminated together and no tickets yet; no moose hits either.

One only need use common sense as to when they need to be on or off.

Hey thanks everybody for all of the answers. I definately got the information I was looking for. :woohoo:

I understand this mod may not be for everyone, but I like being able to switch things on and off in my car when I want to, not just follow the pre-engineered logic.

I hope I didn't ruffle any feathers with my posts, I can be kind of a smartass. That's just me though, I can't help it.
