Well about two weeks ago, I got hit by someone leaving the high school parking lot. All that needs replacement is the rear bumper and he's already gave me $200 for it, I said I'd get a written estimate and let him know how much more he owes me. Well I went to the auto body shop today and it's $229 for the bumper. My parent's said to ask for what it costs for them to put it on and I'd think it'd be about another hundred. They think it's fair for me to be paid for my labor since I'll be putting it on myself.
ANYWHO........
I really wanna get new struts for the Foz (I kinda owe it to my mom) and thought, "Hey, I'll use the money and some of my own to get just that!"
What are your thoughts? Should I? Or is there something else I could do to make the ride a little nicer =]
Eh I wanna put no more than $1.5k into it. I was thinking new wheels/tires and new suspension before I give the car back to my mom in the summer. This project will probably be the suspension one just because I don't have enough for the wheels yet.
Unless you do all the work yourself, $1500 probably is not enough for wheels, tires AND suspension.
My guess is that on an '03 your struts and suspension can go a few more years without too much trouble and your biggest bang for the bug would be wheels and especially tires...really good ones.
I have to admit, when I first read the title of the thread I thought it said, "Hit a Student a While Back..." I rolled my eyes and thought, well that figures!! lol
I'd honestly just pick up some nice tires. Something like the contiextremecontacts. Good traction and good if you like to mess around with the car sometimes. Good match to a stock forester.
Although my dent wasn't as big as yours, I had a similar dent in that exact location. I used a heat gun to warm the plastic up, then got under the bumper and pushed it back in to place with some gloves on. Maybe it's worth a shot, but it could possibly cause more damage. Just a thought.
I tried that once before (this is my 3rd or 4th bumper) and it had an ugly white outline around the dent from where it had been pushed in.. Did yours turn out alright?
Wow third bumper haha? I just popped my dent out last night actually. You could never tell that it was there. However, as I said before my dent was a bit smaller than yours, so maybe that's why it worked for me.
Yeah um, none of the replacements were my fault however so I don't feel as bad
I did have a small dent on the front bumper at one point however and you could definitely tell it was there... Maybe I should've used a real heat gun and not a hair dryer?
They will come in handy if you get little dings in the future. And thanks for the welcome. Lurked the forums for a couple of months before I got my car in August. I believe that is when I registered.
Keep in mind that the stuts on a Subaru do not have a replacement interval. They are really meant to be kept for the lifetime of the car. It is very different from say a GM car where after a 100k you have to replace the struts because the car rides like crap. Over time they will certainly lose some of their stiffness and you may occaisionally have to replace one but overall it is a pretty rare occurance.
