I'm driving a manual Forester 2003 model, 95000km.

Finding it expensive to run

I'm in OZ.

Thinking about where to go next carwise.

I live on a rural property in north east Victoria

Pleased to meet you

Welcome. What exactly do you find expensive about it? The fuel economy, or the cost of repairs/upkeep? Enjoy your time here.

G'day mate.
If you have a turbo, the premium unleaded price in Aus does make the Foz expensive to fuel up - my wife's 6cyl BMW gets getter economy.

What I have found is that the Foz is so reliable and sturdy that little goes wrong (unlike that friggin BMW), and insurance is cheap (again unlike that friggin BMW) so when all the costs are added up the Foz is actually pretty economical.

Although the premium is more, I like it better now that I'm not destroying my transmission going up steep inlines on the freeway in 120 degree weather.

Yes I meant fuel economy wise. I don't have a turbo engine so buy regular unleaded, AUD $1.30, in the rural area where I live.

The Forester has given me little trouble up to now.( Now at 95000km) However I have been quoted AUD $2500 "vehicle has both cylinder heads leaking oil and coolant requires replacing". This quote is from a reliable Subaru dealer where I have always had my car serviced.

After posting here I think I will probably go ahead and have the repairs done

Any further comments welcome

Thanks

would it be cheaper to just get a jdm motor with less miles and slide that sucker in there? not a swap just another one?

What is a jdm motor please Keith?

"JDM" stands for "Japanese Domestic Market", or somesuch, I think. As in, products intended for Japan and not necessarily used in other parts of the world.

Parts can be hard to find sometimes (unless you have cheap shipping from Japan).

Hi Gerri,
The price quoted is excessive, but expect nothing less from a dealer.
The US guys on here are well intended, but in Aus we dont get a lot of imported replacement engines, and the swap over is not always a simple process, primarilly due to our strict rego and road worthy requirements.

It is worth trying for a reconditioned engine from a motor engine specialist, but you may have to try Melbourne or a major regional centre like Geelong or Yass. Make sure it is a engine specialist (ie not a wrecker) who offers a reasonable guarantee on the engine and workmanship.

Failing that, get a second quote from your local trusted mechanic. Also, try the forum OzFoz, the guys there will probably be able to give you local knowledge.

What sort of an average do you get for a tank full?

I'm averaging 9.37 L/100k for all conditions over the lifespan of my 03 Forester.
