Ok so super newbie 1st post here so help a guy out please. This gets slightly confusing in advance. Going to be throwing the word sport around a lot in this post lol. There is a forester sport AND a sport grill that can go with any trim level forester that comes in black, silver, and chrome accordingly.

My wife and I bought our first subaru last Thursday, a 19 Premium. Before leaving talked with the salesman and a guy at the service desk about the sport grill (part # J1010SJ102). I asked if I could buy the black version along with the black pieces that would go on the sport model, service guy says sure but your top half will be silver still and that to get the top and middle trim pieces I would need to buy a whole black grill assembly for the sport in addition to the sport grill. Sounds like they are trying to get me to spend on pieces I don't need IMO. I went onto the parts website and cant figure out which part numbers are the trim pieces I am looking for to complete a black "sport" grill. When I go under the the parts available for the premium and sport they come up with the exact same part numbers for the grille assemblies with nothing to differentiate them.

Thanks in advance! I know is completely unnecessary, but I wanted to go for the sport model forester but couldn't get down with all the orange. I was going to just bite the bullet but my wife was out right away when she sat inside and saw the orange all over the dash etc. lol

Looking at Subaru parts page now.... yeah dude.... *** haha. THAT is some odd business right there. Maybe the black and chrome upper is not available yet?

Save some $$ and just paint or wrap your existing. Or you can always wait and see if this is just some Unavailable part, for now.

Definitely would confuse me too (easy to do though....). GL!

Ok, I took a look at my 19’ Sport and also the Subaru parts page. The following pictures show what parts you’ll need to have a black-out front grille like the Sport model.

I’ve highlighted the part numbers needed. Just verify with dealer but I’m 99% positive this is all you will need.

This shows the parts that I believe you would like to replace.

This part is the Black Sport Grille (honeycomb) **Not the Sport Model Grille**

Here’s the catch. As I understand it, you would still have to purchase the “Sport Model” Lower Grille to have the black-out trim. Then swap out the origina “Sport Model” grill with the “New Sport Grill (honeycomb).
So the dealer guy was kinda correct. Beats me why we have to purchase these parts like we do but the Sport Model is kinda a special trim level in certain ways (the black-out parts).

Second solution: Buy aftermarket front grille complete assy., and just swap out with what you have on your Premium. Yeah it may not be OEM but it’s cheaper unless you just want factory OEM parts.

Hey guys thanks for the input! Really appreciate it. Talked with the guy that actually handles ordering the parts at my dealership and he said with it being a new model year he thinks that is the reason they are keeping smaller individual parts locked into the whole assembly. I want to keep it OEM for now so I think I am going to get the sport grille in silver to match my current grille color and going to wrap it. Seems 3M has black available in gloss, matte, satin, and carbon fiber. Not sure which way I am leaning as of now. I considered painting but I'd rather just be able to peel it off and rewrap if I get a chip or nick in the wrap.
