I'm a first time Forester and Subaru owner from Newmarket NH. Needed a solid reliable family car for the winters here and went with a 2000 L series. Hoping to get the most out of my Forester!

Welcome! Subaru, the official car of New England! LFOD!

You've already done the first thing we ask of new members, and that's to provide an honest to goodness geographical location in your profile. This is helpful to all of us in suggesting local sources of parts and service (and offering personal help). The next thing that would be useful is to put the vital info about your Forester into your signature. Year, model, and transmission type should do it. That lets us do a better job targeting our answers to any of your questions, and it makes it so that you don't have to remember to include this info in the text of your posts if you’re asking for assistance or advice.

In case you haven't already come across it, we've got a great FAQ sort of thread called Common problems, need your help! that everybody ought to become familiar with. It will point you to some of the best posts on how to deal with a lot of the more common situations you might encounter. And also look at the stickies up at the top of each forum's listings for answers to many of the most significant aspects of owning a Forester. Start with this forum right here, where you'll find the most basic info.

With your Forester 'being of a certain age,' there are a couple of things you need to be on the lookout for. Do you have a maintenance history on it? Pre-2003s ('SF' models) do tend to have an unfortunately high incidence of head gasket problems, though once fixed they are pretty solid. And the maintenance schedule calls for replacement of the timing belt at 105k miles. This is probably the one most important piece of scheduled maintenance in the life of the car.

Thanks...

I was turned onto Subaru by co-workers who owned Outbacks and they gave me a heads up about the head gasket and timing belt issues. Looking forward to being part of the community here!

Welcome to the form from Oregon!

Always room for another Forester owner! Post up a picture of your 2000 Forester so the members can look it over. You're required to have 15 posts to link to a host (to prevent spamming), but you can attach pictures (thumbnails) now.

There sure are lots of Subies around here, but I think that the folks over on the left side of the river have us beat.

Welcome to the board. With respect to HG leak. I would suggest giving it a charge of Subaru Brand Coolant and a little blue bottle of the Subaru Conditioner (stopleak). Its under 3 bucks.
