I was running on 'E' for a day or two, went up a steep hill, the car coughed a bit. Then I noticed a severe rumbling from the rear end. Thought it was the diff :(. Then filled up with V-max and no more rumbling. Could I have done some damage to the fuel pump...?

Its possible. I killed mine after running it too low and then taking some right hand corners too hard (making hard rights starves the fuel pump as the baffling in the tank isn't that amazing).

If it starts cutting out at higher revs, especially when you have less than a quarter tank, then it probably needs replacing.

Might want to just replace it with a nice walbro as they're pretty cheap.

Walbro is around 90 quid and I think you will need one to fit a classic impreza, MY00..
