Gear Shift Indicator Intermittent Problem

When it happens, if you push or pull the gear shifter, does the D show up?
This happens on my car, but with the P instead, all I have to do is push the gear shifter forward and the P shows up- most likely need the inhibitor switch, and shifter cable adjusted.

I've tried to wiggle it a little and move it in and out of "D" and it doesn't help. I'll look down later and sometimes the "D" will reappear mysteriously. I'll look into the inhibitor switch and cable. Thanks!
As in no back lighting?

No, the lighting is fine. It's the box that shows you what gear you're in.
