I recently gas up the brand new 2018 forester and noticed that the gas cap does not click. I unscrewed and screwed it on several times but no clicks at all. All the other times it has clicked. Everything seems tight and clean. Is there a problem? Do I need a new cap?

If the gas cap is not sealing properly you would have had a check engine light in short order.. I would not rush to the dealer, but I would check to see if they will replace the cap under warrenty. It is part of the emissions control system. If you do get a check engine light, the engine wil operate run at default values ,not optiumum values and you will wonder if the gas cap is the isssue. Cheers Doug

Unfortunately, I have no confidence in my dealer after a bad experience when they took my car in for a simple service. If anything I would rather buy a new gas cap. Is the part number 42031FJ000 correct? Does anyone know the part number of the plastic clip holding the leash?

for the most i just snug mine up and go. the continuous clickers are to prevent over tightening. i'll have to see what the manual has to say about it.

Yes, I would leave it alone if it were a car that is more than three years old but if it is less than 1 year old why has the click mechanism on the gas cap already broke? Subaru's "made in japan" gas caps are that poorly made that they cannot even last a year? Technically, I probably fueled up less than twenty times since my car has less than 3000 miles. There is some sort of manufacturing issue with these gas caps if they cannot last a year.

Do you have a different dealer near you? If not, it may not be a bad idea to go to this dealer anyway, just to get the issue logged - as long as you get the paperwork for your visit.

I guess you could send an email to Subaru customer service to start a paper trail, but they might just tell you to visit the dealer.

my Foz's gas cap closes with increasing resistance, but no click. no CELs, no nothing. learned behavior: stop when resistance is there. Don not follow the Borg mantra!
