Ok, well I installed my K&N replacement filter when I took a look at how the intake system is made on this car.

We all know the intake comes from a small 2x2 hole in the front under the hood... which goes into a huge box and a small pipe which extends down towards the tranny..
Now I know about the home depot airbox mod.. but was wondering what does the OEM front box do? and that 2" tube which extends towards the tranny?

Is it to lower intake noise? Add torque?

Air box is just that - a vessel to keep some volume of air close to the intake; it is there to reduce lag/bogging in situations when you sharply open the throttle from closed or nearly-closed position; it does not "increase torque" overall.

The protruding "appendices" on the intake are there to muffle intake sound and/or diffuse resonances (self-induced oscillations) in the air flow.

Pipe to nowhere

I'm interested to know where that pipe that is open and pointing at the tranny does?
