As others have stated, if we do get a turbo again it will be for fuel economy rather than a revival of our beloved "WRX in a box".

Anyone knows what AV-S8 means? It is the same code as Outback Wilderness Turbo and Forester 2.5 N/A for 2021 and 2022 have a different code...
Still hoping it was some kind of mistake...
I could MAYBE see the specific motor listed on the Wilderness being a mistake, but I very much doubt any of the MPG numbers are in error. With that in mind, the CB18 turbo might could get those MPG numbers, but no chance the FA24F turbo would. The Outback and Forester have the same MPG numbers with the FB25D so the Wilderness could not be 2 MPG better with the same engine.

For the standard forester there is only one set of numbers and that matches the 2021 so I don't see any chance that the non-wilderness listing is wrong.

Regardless, all of this is an EXTREMELY small possibility. More than likely this is correct.

Probably different axle ratios as well. That's what they did with the Outback. What we still don't know is if they're upgrading to the TR690 CVT.
Very likely.

It’s possible the transmission control module was changed to give the simulated 7 gears to the TR580 along with the changes to match a different rear axle ratio…

or maybe subaru just used the TR690 with the different rear axle ratio, which has the 7 simulated gears in the outback/ascent.

Forester Wilderness is going to take the slowest Subaru model crown from the regular Crosstrek. Disappointing.
No way that's even possible. I've been driving a '21 2.0 Crosstrek loaner for the past couple of days. Our NA '05 Foz had more power with leaky HGs than a brand new Slothtrek!

If we're ever forced to get rid of the '05, the replacement will likely be a 2.5 Crosstrek.

The Wilderness is not built for speed. If, like Tom Cruise (as Maverick in Top Gun), you "feel the need, the need for speed", a Wilderness model would not be your first choice.

Instead, the Wilderness is what many Forester owners have been asking for - or at least building - a more capable, stock-from-the-box soft-roader with the lift and other bits from the factory and - therefore - covered by the factory warranties, rather than hopefully covered by some 3rd party provider.

As for the MPG drop - it is more going to be because of the added weight of the Wilderness specific equipment, change in tires, change in gearing/final drive ratios. Those all-terrain Geolandars have a higher rolling resistance than those (currently) standard Ecopia all season rubber.

In comparing a Wilderness to the Outback model with the same 2.4 turbo, you see a similar drop (actually a small bit less) between the Wilderness and Outback XT models.

That variance would be due to the weight and the added equipment and "mechanical" differences between those two models.

In the 3 years I have had my '18 Forester XT I have only seen one other Forestrerf XT of any year. That is not just in my town. Its where ever I travel.
Not a chance they will bring back a Forester with actual performance. Totally understandable.

I couldn't find it with a quick search, but I think that the Forester Sport already uses an 8 speed simulated gear programing instead of the 7. Not positive on that though. I could be thinking of the Japanese Sport that has the CB18 engine.

Oddly, @adc - I see more than a few SJ generation XTs here in the Palm Springs area... but still not anything compared to the number of 2.5 N/A models I see...

You can often tell a lot about where a manufacturer’s product direction is headed by seeing the ads they produce.

If you watch Subaru Forester commercials, it’s easy to see what market the company is going after.

Demonstrations of automatic self-engaging safety features and depictions of a family of dogs driving in urban and highway environments aren’t meant to appeal to the types of customers that want any type of performance oriented vehicles.

Imagine "The Barkleys" trying to sell a WRX. To ensure no animals are harmed, only CGI vape smoke would be used!

It will probably look like a Forester with a lift and some black wheels and a slightly different front and rear fascia, possibly a different roof rack set up - different side rails and possibly integrated crossbars like the Outback Wilderness.. It should be offered in a few colors including the Wilderness specific blue that the Outback Wilderness is available in, with the flat-black center section on the hood.

A friend of mine went from a 2020 Forester in green (totaled when they were hit from behind by a speeding Ford Fusion driven by some drugged out guy) and just bought a new 2022 Outback Wilderness (also in the green color) and they love it (so far!)...

We should know all the details in 3 days IIRC? I guess it will also cover all the lineup?
What is this based on? The WRX was supposed to be announced on the 19th at the NY Auto show, but that got removed from their site when the show was canceled? I do think there is a really good chance it will drop this week, but I didn't think there was any indication of when. Tomorrow morning is a pretty good chance as Tuesday morning is a very common time for their announcements to drop.
