Just curious, has anyone in possession of a Wilderness popped the hood to see if the underside and engine bay are painted?

@gsdude I gotta admit, I was a little bummed when she popped the hood and I saw that grey primer. I get why they do it but its a pet peeve of mine.

Huh, my 2021 is body color inside the engine bay. I also missed the hood struts, my 2017 had hood struts. That was silly to backpedal on.
My old Crosstrek Orange was grey primer.

This may well be an early production (or even a pre-production) model that is used as a test bed and not a real production model. Usually, most vehicles are painted with hood and all in place and so they get the full paint under hood, inside doors and so on.

@FozzieBalou I hope so, but I seem to remember when I had my 2015 Crosstrek that other owners were saying the underside of their hoods were primer.

Since I spent the last few days nerding out over the service manual, I thought I'd share the list of mechanical differences I could find between the regular 2022 Forester and the Wilderness trim. Some of these are covered by reviewers, and some I hadn't seen before.

Suspension

• Longer struts
• Redesigned springs
• Redesigned front sway bar
• Redesigned front sway bar clamps

Drivetrain

• Shorter CV axles (???)
• Shorter final drive
• Larger CVT case
• Wider CVT ratio
• CVT cooler
• CVT-III fluid instead of CVT-II
• Rear diff oil temperature sensor
• New front transmission oil pump

Engine and Cooling

• More powerful radiator fan (from the WRX)

I'm sure I'm missing some stuff, so let me know and I'll update the post.

My Forester Wilderness came in much earlier than expected. Just drove it home. I can directly confirm that the spare tire does indeed have raised white letters, just as in the video I cited above.
