Hey guys.

What are the main differences between the two subies?

Is the Forester better offroad? I'm aware that the Outback has the bigger engine. .

Which has the most ground clearance etc etc

anything else you guys can tell me about the pro's and con's of these two would be great!

Thanks,
Keith.

Go to this link:

http://www.cars101.com/

and there is a ton of info that will help. In general, the Outback is built on the Legacy (Liberty?) platform so it has a larger wheelbase and it's bigger inside The Forester is built on the Impreza platform.. I've had both at the same time and found the Forester more fun to drive but the Outback held more stuff an was better on long trips. The OB only comes in an automatic when equipped with the 3.0-H6 motor.

the forester is actually made in japan.. whereas the legacy/outback is made in the u s of a. i found the outback had a much smoother ride.. probably due to the longer wheelbase..

Peaty, the Tribeca hasn't got to Aus yet. Could you give us some quick impressions and how you are finding it to drive please?
Cheers

The question is, what do you want it for:?: Whilst being alike in many respects, they are very different in others:shock:

Both are made in Japan.
The US made outbacks are for the US (and this question is about Aussie Outbacks I presume, which do come from Japan)

Offroad the Forester is probably a bit better. Shorter wheelbase and smaller overhangs. Clearance is claimed to be the same.
Neither is going to be an offroad monster. Both should get you through sand, mud and some rough stuff.
There are some threads here showing what the Forester can do offroad.
Or you can pop over to offroadsubarus.com - that has both Forester and Outback owners.

Both come with 2.5 engines in their base models, but the Outback as the 3l six (auto only) while the Forester has the 2.5l turbo.
The 3l is more powerful (180kW v 169) but the turbo has more torque and at lower revs (320Nm @ 3600 v 297 @ 4200)
I havent driven the 3l (I have an XT) but Im guessing the XT is much stronger in the mid range (say 2500-4000 rpm) but might be weaker when the turbo is off boost at around 2000.

Both are great cars. If you need the extra room in the back or in the back seats then the Outback is probably for you.

Having owned both OB and F I'd suggest in standard form that the Forester is way better off-road.

Keith, as already stated you have to weigh up your potential use of the vehicle.

OK sorry guy's I'll explain exactly what I want one of these for:

I am a shooter and do some offroad/dirt driving and am not looking at tackling any huge 4wd trails however I would enjoy doing some easy tracks.

Whilst I am in the bush a fair bit I mainly do 40km a day commuting to work and back so I don't want to go to an all out 4wd like a Landcruiser or Hilux!

I currently have a 2.2L Auto Camry and would like something with no less performance then this in torque and power which leads me to think a pre02 model Forester will be a bit underpowered for me though I havent test drove one yet.

In summary,

I want my car to have decent clearance, can tackle most reasonable off road situations, will be good for driving offroad and through paddocks and the like but has to handle like a car and be reasonable on fuel. A turbo is out of the question due to insurance and me being under 25.

Sorry guys hope thats a little more information!

One of the "X" series Foresters would do the trick (that is a MY03 onwards ie the newer look)
They have the 2.5l engine and should easily match if not out perform the Camry.
They come with 4wd, its a permanent system rather than a 2wd/4wd on demand like some other soft roaders. This means the 4wd is always active, although the system is slightly different between auto and manual models.
Handle like a car (not a sports car!), has reasonable fuel economy, can do some light offroad, certainly a dirt road with bumps is no problem.
The 4wd isnt lockable, so you can get stuck spinning wheels in mud or sand or if caught up on rocks - but so will most urban 4wds these days.
Its got some reasonable clearance - if you do get worried you can get a sump guard for a few hundred dollars that will give you some protection and peace of mind.

Now Id also look at the Xtrail as the main competitor.

As I said before the Outback gives you more space but it comes at a higher cost. Its also less capable offroad, but from the sounds of it not enough to probably worry you.
Subis hold their value well, so if you are looking at say 3 year old models then the Forester is probably more than the Xtrail.

What DN and Kevin said;-) I don't think the X-Trail is worth looking at. My experience of the 'offroad' was quite unpleasant. An NA Forester does the onroad and offroad thing very well. The Hydro, Gov. and Forestry companies buy heaps of them here in Tas for that very reason.

Don't discount the XT on insurance grounds, that's one of their 'party pieces'

Goodluck,

Simon

P.S get a luxury model so you can hang out of the roof picking off wildlife.

Manual is for try hards. Bloody pointless off the road, boring as hell on the road but I guess they work for the mathematicians out there - ie. boring

I was being a smart arse by the way - DN knows I was just joking ....
