My temperature gauge is bouncy around like a Spaniards honeymoon mattress at the moment, it will literally go from normal (just under halfway) to beyond the red and back down to normal in the space of a minute.

I had a similar problem in my Escort and I eventually worked out that the thermostat needed replacing.

Same thing on the foz do you think? Also, would you risk leaving it til the weekend (i *should* only need it tomorrow but that may change) or is it best to get it sorted right away?

As suspect as Subaru's head gaskets are, I would not tempt fate and drive the car with a malfunctioning cooling system. Overheating is going to stress both the head and the head gaskets possibly causing them to fail and/or warp. I would get your problem checked out asap. Changing the thermostat is not a difficult task for a DIYer if that is what's causing your problem.

Cheers guys, seems fairly straight forward.

I'll try and get the day off tomorrow and have a crack at fixing it.

Stat is a doddle on the EJ engines......

Maybe of course a slightly poor connection on the temp sensor, they work of resistance and a small change can have a big effect.

check water levels first.

Mine went up on Saturday and I though damn burst my rad when I hit a snow bank. Checked the water level and it was down, so topped up with the engine running and its been fine since and coolant level hasnt gone down.

I was offered two stats for my 2.0x. Took them both and returned the one I didn't use. I suppose it's model dependant. Do it soon for all they cost. mine went on the motorway.
