Parents are driving up from Texas to spend Christmas with us in Montana.

They've made it from Houston almost to El Paso when they had a problem.

They stopped to fill up and the car only took 5 gallons and the gauge read empty. They figured the 5 gals was about right from their last stop and the gauge issue was a fluke so they continued on.

30 miles later the car loses power on the highway then dies. They are now on the shoulder and the car will crank and start for a few seconds then die.

I was initially thinking it was electrical, but the fact that is will start and run for a short period had me thinking fuel. At one point they let it sit for 5 minutes and it started and ran for about 15 seconds before stalling.

Is this an evaporator issue? Will it self resolve if it sits for awhile?

Any other thoughts?

They are getting ready to have it towed into the Subi dealer in El Paso. They are closed today so this will have to wait until tomorrow unless we can figure it out.

Car in question:

2005 Outback Non Turbo Automatic with 55k miles.

Or, the might be out of gas....

Apparently each thought the other had filled the tank. They didn't figure it out until they were towed into El Paso. They're back on the road now.
