Drove Subaru XT Touring home from the dealer just now. My heart is aching cause I can definitely hear a ticking/clicking sound coming from the engine. I'll try to post a sound later. Seems to me like a brand new car's engine should make no sound other than a nice hum.

That may just be the sound of the DI system (direct injection)...that is normal...at least this is what I suspect it is....

Please clarify...is this the sound you hear when you open the hood (or while you are driving...you shouldn't really hear the DI system from inside the car)

Is this while moving, or idling? My 2.5i is so quiet I can hear the valves clicking at idle with the windows down. If it's so loud as to be heard in motion, turn around and go straight back to the dealer!

The boxer engine doesn't sound like other engines.. it may be normal. I wouldn't worry just yet.

That would be such a relief if this were normal. This is the first new car I've bought.

Can't hear the noise from the inside. Only from the outside... then opening the hood it's much more pronounced.

Here is a clip I took with my cellphone with the hood open.

Subie Clicking

Thanks!:icon_sad:

It's a noise you need to get use to on Direct Injection engines. My 2012 Kia Sportage was my first vehicle with DI and it made the same clicking noise.

Yup.....that sounds like the DI system....nothing to worry about.....enjoy your new Forester.......I think a bigger problem for you is going to be the seemingly "eternal" amount of time it's going to take to hit 1K miles so that you could REALLY enjoy the XT.......

Don't beat yourself up over it. Now that you've heard from others with experience with the DI, just enjoy your new car.

Ok, one more question ... how loud is the XT engine inside the car for you folks?

I took it out and ran it pretty good and when I got home I just sat in it and listened ... just seems very loud... it might just take some getting used to... weird that I can hear an engine that much inside the car (with no air on).

In case anyone wants to follow more down in the paranoid doughnut, here's me just recordin on a cellphone... (listen after 12 sec cause I fidget with something and it's loud).

Thanks again.

Hard to tell what's going on from a recording like that, nor is it easy to know your expectations. You need an SPL meter to measure properly. I come from a WRX with 3" turbo-back exhaust with some of the cats missing, and the Forester in comparison is closer to an EV in terms of noise in the cabin.

I'll just add to the voices to say that the DI system clicking is the dominant engine sound you hear with the hood up while idling. It's nothing to be worried about. I've heard the same thing on other DI cars. I guess a 2000 psi injector makes some noise when it works!

I've found the cabin in my XT to be nice and quiet with only moderate background engine hum. If you give it some throttle, a distinct turbo whistle is heard, which is a nice touch, but nothing I'd call "loud".

I find the engine on my FXT to be very quiet compared to many other vehicles I have drove.

If you think something is wrong with your XT, bring it back to the dealer and have them look at it.

Hi take it back to the Dealer , that is why they are there for in the first place, let them reassure you that your XT is normal, and if it is not , let them fix it for you! it is a win win situation....
