Do I absolutely need new strut tops for a new set of Excel-Gs? Have Kings on already on stock struts. Putting on 2"/2.5" lift kit soon.

In a word, No. But, it depends also, take a look at the front top hat and see if the rubber around the bearing is bulging and cracking, replace it. there is not much that goes wrong in the rear except that rubber can get old as well but it's harder to visually inspect.

Food for thought, consider getting the SJ KYB struts, they fit, have more damping and are better match to the kings IMO. I installed some SJ KYB on regular kings on my SH and its worked well for the last 6 months.

Remember to compare quality while comparing price.

As stated, inspect the rubber section and check for the rubber separating from the steel inner and outer rings. Do this at ride with wheels on the ground, if they all look good, jack it up so suspension hangs free thus loading the hats in opposite direction and reinspect. They can look good sittin with weight on them, that's why I check both ways. :)
