I am replacing my engine air filter (2010 Forrester, non-turbo), but forgot to check the correct direction of it when pulling the old one out.

Anyone be so kind to check yours and tell me what is the correct direction of it? The filter is square in shape. There is a small blue mark on one side. Is this side supposed to be up?

The new filter is bought from Subaru dealer. It is exactly the same as the old one.

Thanks a lot!

Air flow goes through the "pleats" first. So the "smooth" side is toward the engine.
If its like the 08 the "pleats" are down.

It should be easy to determine which part of the filter housing is the inlet and which is the outlet. Then compare the old filter to the new one. Dirty side of the old one = inlet side.

Thanks guys. I know what is the inlet and outlet side. This is obvious. What i am asking is the up-down direction. Or it doesn't matter because it's square?

Thanks!

Doesn't matter. Although, you *might* find that larger debris falls off easier if the pleats are vertical...
