I've got a 2011 Forester XT that originally came with the non-nav head unit.

A couple of years ago I replaced the OEM unit with a Pioneer 4100NEX, which has been working fine until recently.

Lately, I've noticed that the steering wheel audio controls have become intermittent. Some times they work, some times not. Worst is volume up, but sometimes none of the audio control buttons work.

I'm trying to troubleshoot the problem, but I was wondering if anyone has ever had the steering wheel audio controls fail (either in a stock head unit or aftermarket configuration).

I suspect the failure is with the aftermarket audio control input adapter (it takes the steering wheel audio inputs, and transforms it to a format that the head unit can understand).

Before I start pulling the dash apart to get to stuff, I wanted to see if anybody has experienced issues directly attributable to the steering wheel audio controls.

On a side note, I know there's a firmware update available for the Pioneer unit, and I've been trying to get it to update to see if that makes a difference.
