What CEL - check engine light code or codes do you have?

Hi & welcome!

In this order - check oil level and have a general look atop and underneath the engine for any obvious signs of issues.

Then you then need to get the code read to see what the problem might be. Some auto parts stores also offer this service. If the noise gets worse, consider getting a towtruck to a garage.

Not checked the codes yet, my husband has a code reader that I'm going to get him to hook it up to tonight I was just a little afraid for our son to drive it home in fears of it causing damage.

I hear you. I'd say if in any doubt at all, don't drive it. Engine noises and check engine lights happening together are not normally good news.
