Hey Guys,

I'm helping a mate change the auto transmission fluid in his 05 turbo forester. Seeing as neither of us have done ATF before, we're following some directions that basically say drain the fluid completely ("completely" is the problem, see below), and fill with new fluid through the dipstick pipe.

Problem we've encountered though, the manual says that it'll take 9.5 litres of fluid, but we've only managed to drain about 3 from the drain in the pan. Is that normal?

After a bit of looking around, I've seen that for a lot of cars the transmission pan is completely removed and cleaned. Up until now I thought that was only because they didn't have drains, but maybe it somehow allows the rest of the fluid to drain? Should it be removed on my mates car?
