My Forester has been running worse everyday for the last few weeks. It has engine codes for misfiring and lean oxygen sensor readings. 9 codes total.

I thought the timing belt had either skipped a tooth or striped in some way. I took off the timing cover and found everything in good condition. As I went to put the belt back on I noticed the driver's side camshaft pulley was tight, but the passenger's side one had about 2 inches of play in it. It doesn't move up, down, in or out but has significant play that doesn't move the rocker arms at all.

What could be striped? (The camshaft pulley is fine)

Is the cam ruined?

Should I pull the head?

Chances are the pin in the pulley that acts as a key to lock it to the cam has sheared, not uncommon. If you are lucky you have not smacked a valve yet...... If you have pull the head.
