I just bought a 2007 Forester with 89,000 miles on it. After driving it a few months, I notice that the brakes squeak the first couple of times when I use them. After I've used them a bit it stops. Two questions: (1) Is this normal or might I need new brakes? (2) If I do need new brakes, should I get new OEM brakes from a Subaru dealer (nearest is 100 miles away) or are aftermarket brakes okay?

1) Normal.
2) Aftermarket brake pads are superior and cheaper.
You only need new pads when they are below the minimum thickness.

As for OEM or aftermarket, all depends on the pad from the aftermarket company. Some squeak more then others. But typically better quality aftermarket pads can be had for less then OEM price considering the OEM pads are about $80.
