Does anyone know off the top of their head what type of brake fluid I would need for a 1998 Forester? I am heading home from school in a few days, and the brake light recently came on. I would check the manual, but that's a mile away with the car. Thanks in advance.

Just us that type it's pretty good and will safely mix with what you have. Just don't get silicone based is all.

However, if the brake light came on because the fluid is low, that means you should check for pad wear, the fluid is low for a reason. Look for leaks too but most likely you pads have gone down. Don't just go by the pad you can see at the outside you need to look at the inside one too.
Good luck at school :)

Okay, here's the story. A couple of months ago I had the front rotors, calipers, and pads replaced along with an e-brake adjustment. The rear pads were still at 50%, so they were left alone. I've only ever seen this light when I pull the e-brake on. I called my mechanic today and he said the light doubles as an e-brake reminder and a general brake warning light. He's the one who suggested that I check my brake fluid. Since the front brakes are new, I REALLY hope that there's nothing wrong with them, especially considering how much they cost. Damn you New Jersey for your high cost of living!

I travel from Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia, PA to Sussex County, NJ. On a good day it's a 2.5 hour trip, so the last thing I need is to suddenly have no brakes, especially with the added weight of my whole room in the car.

I lived by Newton for many years , my college was in Doylestown PA so I have an idea about the travel time. I really think you just need a little fluid, make sure everything was tightened up properly an nothing is leaking brake fluid at the wheels.

Well, things just got a little more interesting today. For some reason, the front left brake decided to start squeaking. When I got home, I could smell it burning. So much for my $600 brake job. :chair:

My mechanic told me the caliper was, in fact, leaking. It's under warranty, so right now we're just waiting for the part to come in. I also had him look at some fresh fluid under the car, and he believes that the cam seals and a gasket on the transmission may be leaking. However, he was honest and said that it looks worse than it is because the fluids have accumulated a little bit. Yay for honesty.
