The SF5 Forester is the 1st generation, however there are several changes between a 1999 and a 2001 version.
Currently i'm deciding between a 1999 SF5 S-turbo and a 2001 SF5 S-turbo.

Ofcourse the 1999 one (green 2 tone) is cheaper but not by much, so i ask myself if the 2001 is a better choice apart from it being 2 years 'younger'.
Are there any drawback to the 2001 model compared to the older 1999 ?

I think I'm right in saying that a late 01 will have 177ch instead of 170ch in the earlier versions. There are other differences in the exhaust system too, to fit in with emissions regulations (it resembles the 01 WRX exhaust with a resonator and no center cat, the cat is in a separate section just in front).

Nicer interior on the later ones, certainly amongst the imports. Also facelift imports had a different trim TD04 (spooled earlier, less topend).

None of this matters to you :) but someone might need to know one day...

99/00MY is 168bhp, no up-pipe cat, classic impreza exhaust line (catted downpipe, cat in centre section and backbox).

01-> is 199bhp, catted up pipe and newage impreza exhaust line (catted downpipe, underfloor cat, and catless centre section and backbox).

Confusingly midlife facelift came at 00MY with no powertrain changes.

:)))

Can I therefore replace OEM exhaust from downpipe back with pattern newage impreza stuff (eg Prodrive, RAYS or similar)?

Reason i ask is that mine is about to go on the join between down pipe and centre section and fancy something a bit throatier :)))

Won a backbox from them about 3 yrs back in one of the Jap mags comps', problem was it was for an Impreza ! just far too short for the T/tb, sold it on though. Nice bit of kit, solid and heavy.

I heard indeed that you need an exhaust backbox that is made for the Fozzy specificly or has at least a LONG exhaust tip otherwise it ends up underneath the bumper and it often melts the rear bumper.
