Start/stop kind of waste.

The start/stop system is my only complaint about my '19 Forester. I push the off button every time now. After the first couple of weeks of using the system I decided the amount of gas & money it saved wasn't worth it, especially since it's just not as silky smooth as the rest of the car.

I like using the AVH system so I don't have to hold the brake down, but I coming from a manual transmission so I'm used to not having to have my foot on a pedal at a light. Unfortunately the AVH system works the same way as far as the brake pedal is concerned so if you push a little harder on the brake after stopping it activates both systems and then the delay to start up is too long because my foot is already resting on the gas, waiting for the green light.

@Peja - yeah I have a light brake foot I guess. Most of my driving has been in ACC mode and with the “Eco” characteristic. So it’ll hold me when it comes to the stop at a light. I would like to see the restart (after tapping gas pedal or hitting resume on wheel) last a little longer before it disengages and returns to hold.

When I drive manually I usually prefer the AVH turned on as I don’t have to maintain that constant brake pressure.

For me the biggest thing is anticipating when traffic will move forward in ACC mode as it does take an extra half second before it starts moving.

It cannot be deactivated, you must push the button every time you start the car. The concierge dude at the dealer said it makes a tiny but meaningful contribution to the corporate average fuel economy, which is why it can't be defeated. The only times it won't activate are if the front or rear defrosters are on, or if the wheel isn't exactly straight ahead. IMHO, just push the damn button or get used to this small annoyance in an otherwise excellent car.

It can’t be done on a purely stock vehicle, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be done.

Just as aftermarket vendors have started offering start/stop “defeat” mechanisms for Ford, Jeep, GM and other makes of vehicles with start/stop technology, soon we will see the same devices for Subaru’s lineup.

Folks just need to be patient. It won’t be long...

Not sure why you want to defeat it. It is on in the time it takes you to release pressure on the brake and apply throttle. The throttle is pretty aggressive as is, so it’s not like you’re going to be slow off the line.

If anything, this technology makes me want to have a hybrid more. I hope some variant of a plug in E-Boxer makes its way into a Forester in a few years. I just can’t fit in a Crosstrek.

I’ve pretty much mastered the brake modulation motion and very rarely trigger the start/stop “feature/curse”, depending upon one’s point of view.

For those that like it, well... they’re already set.

For those that don’t, there will be a simple and somewhat inexpensive resolution soon.

I totally get it... not everyone is Toyota Prius material...or Dodge Challenger Demon material... take your pick.

I agree. I was a skeptic until I used it. I don’t mind it. It’s like a plastic straw. One straw doesn’t make a difference. But a billion people saying no to a plastic straw makes a big difference.

I dont think it has anything to do with being quick off the line. Your right Pilot it does restart fast. No issues with that. Myself, I could care less about how fast it is off the line anyway .
But for most and I will say “most” drivers, it’s just annoying, intrusive and ruins the driving experience.
Everyone knows it can be turned off. Just remember to turn it off…
every time.
And theres the rub.
Find another way to achieve the desired result because this is too annoying.
And for those that say they like it. Well thats cool,…but do you “really” like it ? As asked before, would you have paid for this if it were an option ?
Theres really no need to answer.

Wife and I hate it. Jars the whole car when it restarts.
Will be watching for the workaround!

Yes, I agree... in principle...

Still, it’s difficult for me to feel too bad about disabling the start/stop function when I’m sitting at a traffic light and a massive SUV or ginormous 4-door pickup pulls up beside me, with some dude (or better yet, some gal that can barely see above the steering wheel) riding alone in the vehicle, while it sits there idling away...

Folks, The stop/start feature is not a big deal to live with. Yes, it turns ON every time you start the car but you can get around it by simply not standing on the brakes at stop lights, etc as others have pointed out. Be gentle with the car.

@MaineJon

It’s pretty quiet. It seems like it also has been getting quieter as I approach the end of my break-in period. The off is near silent. The on is a typical crank sound. There is some vibration but it’s not jerking you around like if you stalled a stick shift.

Yes, I really don't see what all the fuss is about where you just have to push one button. I have to do this at every start in my MY'03 to turn cruise control on; no big deal.
I have been thinking exactly the same thing for a few weeks now. This really is a "first world problem".

Also in late model vehicles (at least in Oz), you have to press the "Start" button to start the car- no-one seems to complain about that onerous task. After all, in older cars we had this really annoying thing called a key, you had to stick it in a slot, turn and hold it for a brief period to start the car. And if it didn't work the first time, you had to turn it AGAIN. How did people survive??!

LOL!

I’m old enough to remember having to use the key, pull out the choke knob and then step on the floor pedal to manually engage the starter pinion gear to the flywheel ring gear to get the vehicle started... all on a 6 volt electrical system.
