I too find it annoying and I think it can be programmed by the dealer to default off instead of on. It seems I remember either hearing or reading this. I am planning to have mine reprogrammed at my next scheduled meeting if that is possible. I might be wrong and if so, I'll report back ..

Reportedly, this is not programmable. The auto start/stop helped Subaru achieve a better gas mileage rating.

The Auto Start/Stop is slowly destroying the alternator on my 2018 Volkswagen Atlas R-Line. My wife has had to call me on two occasions cause she couldn't get the car to start after stopping somewhere quickly to run inside. She tells me that completely random symbols keep appearing on the instrument panel, never the same ones. I have recommended that she disable the feature every time she gets in the car to go out with the truck. It's great if it helps with fuel efficiency but the last thing I want is my wife and kids getting stuck someone when I'm not with them. Glad I got the 2018 Black Edition which resembles the Sport edition.

Auto Stop start and vehicle hold

I hate the auto stop start.
I know I can turn it off each time I start my car by hitting the button, but can I disable it for good?

This can not be good for the starter.

The auto vehicle hold I love, but I have to hit the button to turn it on. Is there a way to default it to working each time?

Thanks

Before we purchased our vehicle I looked at the vehicle features listed on the dealer's website and did not find the start stop listed.
That's probably because the dealer chose not to advertise what is a negative "feature" for many drivers.

I certainly don't think the auto start is a show stopper. Its like getting into the car and locking your doors or adjusting the seat. I would guess someone will come up with a bypass unless it is part of the computer. Which it might be.

My 78-year-old friend has a 2017 Ford Escape with the stop/start feature. He hated it at first but has grown to like it after a year. In reality, he wanted a Subaru Forester but saved money in buying the Ford. The Escape has been constant problems, rear drive failure at 10,000 miles being the worst!:|

it is part of the computer, something to do with the SMOG laws.
I've had my 19 sport for about 2 weeks now. I love everything about it.
Except that damn auto off/on. Yes you can turn it off literally every time you start the vehicle, but if you have it off and reach for something in the backseat (accidentally pressing the brake harder) it will shut off, button off or not.
I love the car, but for me that IS a showstopper, I absolutely hate it. I see my starter lasting a few years...
My girlfriend was going to buy an outback until she saw that I could not control that feature. Oh well.

I honestly got used to the auto start/stop, i was actually concerned at one point that it didnt turn off, but soon found out that it only turns off on certain conditions.

Anything you have to shut off everytime is a total joke. Accepting it is accepting a mediocre product. Auto/start stop should've never been started at all. A thousand times harder on the starter. The trans also loves randomly cutting power, not! Horrible on every part it affects and might save you $.10 over a year if you're lucky.

Playing with the brake pedal is not a great option. Can anyone else chime in if the auto start/stop turns on even if the a/c is on? This would cause a significant drag on battery and systems I would think.
I can confirm AC and headlights -taillights, and audio / radio all works when Auto Start/stop is activated.

Like someone else said --> it's just the matter of foot pressure on the brake pedal; the harder you press on the brake pedal (after fully warming up the car for driving 1-2miles) it will activate it, when you ease the foot pressure on the brake pedal, the engine comes back on

Let's stay on topic here. We've heard the full range of opinions, relevant and sometimes not, together with a few leads on possible ways to disable it (if so desired).

The next step is for somebody to try to implement one of these, and report back to us.

So I have owned my limited for 5 days now. Was very worried about the auto stop feature before buying. The first few days it came on and worked and didn’t bother me to much, but after it worked, i took it like a reminder for me to disengage it. The last 2 days however it has not stopped the engine when I come to a stop, I have tried different ways of stopping and pressure on the brake. The A with a cross through it symbol comes on when I come to a complete stop but my engine is still running. Go figure! So now I’m not sure if I should take this as a blessing, or if I should take it to the dealer for something I don’t even want! Ha!! I should mention that it was raining and my auto lights function and windshield wipers have been on during this “issue”
